45 2013 in review maltatoday, SUNDAY, 29 DECEMBER 2013 Arjen Robben provided the perfect answer to the doubters by scoring an 89th-minute winner to secure a 2-1 win for Bayern Munich over Borussia Dortmund in a brilliant Champions League final at Wembley on May 25, 2013. This would be Bayern's fifth Champions League victory in their club history. The first German quadruple which FC Bayern Munich won in the single season of 2012-13: the 2012 DFL-Supercup, the 2012–13 Bundesliga, the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League and the 2013 DFBPokal. As well Bayern went on to win the FIFA Club World Cup after they defeated Raja Casablanca 2-0. When the Formula One circus rocks up Down Under for the 2014 season opener in March, Sebastian Vettel will arrive there having not tasted defeat on the race track in an epic 231 days. The sport has arguably never seen dominance like it. Even Michael Schumacher, who won five titles on the spin at the turn of the century - a feat Vettel will be looking to match next term. His win in the season finale in Brazil was his ninth on the bounce, matching Alberto Ascari's 60-year record of most consecutive victories. It also took him to 13 wins for the season - only Schumacher has done that before - and his winning percentage from races entered since 2010 now stands at an extraordinary 44 per cent. Vettel finished the season with 397 points, that's over 150 more than his nearest challenger in Fernando Alonso - the equivalent of seven race victories which is also a new record. Andy Murray defeated world number one Novak Djokovic in straight sets to be crowned the 2013 Wimbledon champion and the first British male to do so since the great Fred Perry 77 years ago. Marion Bartoli, the nearly girl of the 2007 Championships, finally realised the dream she first had as a six-year-old by winning the Ladies' Singles title on Centre Court on 6 July, 2013. Her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sabine Lisicki, while thoroughly deserved, was considerably eased by a nervy performance by her opponent until late in the second set. Manager Roberto Martinez of Wigan Athletic (L) and winning goalscorer Ben Watson. Wigan Athletic claimed the first major trophy in their 81-year history when Ben Watson's last-minute goal won the FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley. Roberto Martinez's side produced a performance full of attacking intent and verve to fully deserve this historic win against firm prematch favourites Manchester City. Substitute Watson, who has missed much of the season after breaking his leg in November, sent Wigan's fans into ecstasy with a near-post header from Shaun Maloney's corner at the very moment the board went up to signal three minutes of stoppage time.
