26 maltatoday, SUNDAY, 5 JANUARY 2014 THIS WEEK WHAT'S ON WHAT'S ON TODAY President's New Year Concert Annual concert in aid of charity at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta at 20:00. Organised by the President's Office together with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, all ticket proceeds will go towards the Community Chest Fund. Directed by Mro Michael Laus, principal conductor of Malta's national orchestra since 1991, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a programme based around excerpts from opera which will include international and local composers – Stephen Psaila and Charles Camilleri will be performed alongside Smetana and Verdi, Tchaikovsky and Saint Saens. Tickets can be purchased for €5 from the President's Office at the Palace in Valletta or from San Anton Palace (09:00-16.00). Tickets can also be purchased from the Mediterranean Conference Centre and Teatru Manoel, Valletta from Monday to Friday 10:00-13:00 and 17:00-19:00. Mini Concert by Animae Short concert by the Animae Gospel Choir at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, the open-air theatre at the ruins of the former Opera House in Valletta. The mini-concert, set to last for about an hour, will commence at 19:00. The choir will perform a number of well known Christmas carols together with Gospel classics and worship songs. JANUARY 31 An Evening of Italian Opera Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Michalis Economou presents an evening of music Theatre, Valletta organised by Masquerade Theatre. Directed by Anthony Bezzina and written by Malcolm Galea, it features a star-studded cast of panto-veterans alongside Malta's most promising new talent. Music is directed by Kevin Abela, choreography by Lee McCallion and costumes designed by Ernest Camilleri. Directed by Rob Ricards. Cast includes Julia Camilleri, Marion Sayers, Abiodun Adeyemi and Joseph Muscat. Designed by Luke Azzopardi and Adrian Abela. The audience is invited to remain for a Q&A session with the cast and crew after the performance. JANUARY 24-26, 31; FEBRUARY 1, 2 Tender Napalm Unifaun Theatre production of Philip Ridley's drama at St James Cavalier, Valletta, 20:00. What happens when two former lovers, traumatised by an unnamed disaster try to pick up the pieces of their relationship? Directed by Toni Attard. Cast includes Bettina Paris and Rommel Grech.
