A number of salvaged original graffiti will also be displayed, including a large ship. graffito and legend dating to 1766 salvaged from a demolished residence in Zurrieq. Opening hours: 09:00 – 17:00. CULTURAL TOURS JANUARY 19 MCCA Cultural Tour: Lija and Balzan Cultural tour of Balzan and Lija organised by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts. Among the areas of interest is Villa Bologna, which was built in 1745 by Fabrizio Grech as a wedding present for his daughter Maria Theresa who married in April that year. Other places of interest include the old parish of Christ the Saviour as well as the museum of the Lija parish church. Departure will be from near a leading hotel in Floriana at 8.45am. Tickets sell for €12 for adults and €10 for the elderly and children. Booking closes at noon on January 15 or earlier if the tour is fully booked. Tickets can be purchased from the offices of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts at 230 Republic Street, Valletta (further down from St George's Square) from Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 15:30. Auk there will also be an emphasis on Maltese species of flora and fauna that have became extinct or are facing extinction. FEBRUARY 19-22 Archaeoacoustics conference An international multi-disciplinary conference at Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa, St Julian's that welcomes academics, researchers, musicologists and non-presenting enthusiasts. Anticipated presentations include performance, discoveries, observations and science from around the world – all focused on the Archaeology of Sound. PUBLIC LECTURES & CONFERENCES UNTIL JANUARY 31 The Great Auk – Extinction is forever… or is it? An exhibition on the Great Auk at the National Museum of Natural History, Mdina, which sadly became extinct in the late 1800s. The last known breeding pair was killed on the island of Eldey (Iceland) in June 1844. It used to winter in southern waters including the Mediterranean Sea and may have also visited the Maltese coastline.
