World renowned IT security expert delivers eye-opening talk in Malta RAMSES Gallego, a world renowned security strategist and evangelist at Dell Software, was recently in Malta to deliver a series of presentations to Chief Information Officers, IT Governance Professionals, IT Assurance and Service Quality Managers who attended a business breakfast at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Floriana organized by the ISACA Malta Chapter. Gallego was elected as ISACA International Vice President in June 2013. The first presentation focused on 'Innovating in the present. Changing the future' – a tour-de- force of the history of IT, from circa 1956, the era of punched cards, right through the Internet as it is changing, to become "the Internet of Things", and "the Internet of Everyone". The 'Internet of Things' is a term used to refer to the ever-increasing number of mobile devices wirelessly connected to the Internet and controllable remotely, by their rightful owners and users. Employing his unique IT evanglisation style, Gallego took his audience on a journey from the past to the near future – a time when traffic on the roads will be constantly mapped on screens, traffic volumes and trends visible to traffic planners, where home appliances, doors, and windows can be operated remotely and securely, before we get home from work. This revolution, which is already underway, will lead to an increase in home comfort, enhanced road safety and less traffic congestion. On the other hand, the 'Internet for Everyone' conjures an egalitarian, but secure society, where technology is pervasive, affordable, sound and safe. As concepts move out of the lab to become working prototypes, and then made widely available as commercial products, some of today's predictions will turn out to be hollow tomorrow, and what cannot be envisaged today will become a common everyday reality tomorrow. Following this futuristic envisioning, Gallego delivered another presentation on "Metrics and Indicators for a changing security landscape". This presentation addressed the technical managers having a keen eye on Corporate Governance, Technology Leadership, and IT Assurance. The presentation showed ways how to measure the risks associated with the optimistic scenarios of futuristic technology through security metrics in order to maintain business technology under control. Ramses Gallego has more than 15 years of security experience, with expertise in the risk management and governance areas, and is an internationally recognized public speaker on topics including cloud computing, risk management and access governance. He has served on ISACA's Guidance and Practices Committee, and the CISM and CGEIT Certification Committees. He is an author of ISACA white papers on geolocation, virtualization and sustainability, and is research director and strategic planner for the ISACA Barcelona Chapter. He also served on the planning committee of the inaugural ISACA World Congress: INSIGHTS and chaired the planning committee for ISACA's Information Security and Risk Management Conference in Europe. The ISACA Malta Chapter Business Breakfast was sponsored by EY, Capstone, RSM and MITA. ISACA Malta Chapter is organizing another educational event on 23 January, where Fabian Borg will deliver a presentation on 'The False Sense of Security'. The event starts at 5pm and will be held at the Radisson Blu, St Julian's. More information is available on http:// www.isaca-malta.com or Linkedin page ISACA Malta Chapter.
