JANUARY 31 An Evening of Italian Opera Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Michalis Economou presents an evening of music from the operas of three great Italian opera masters, Donnizetti, Bellini and Puccini. An exhibition on the Great Auk at the National Museum of Natural History, Mdina, which sadly became extinct in the late 1800s. The last known breeding pair was killed on the island of Eldey (Iceland) in June 1844. It used to winter in southern waters including the Mediterranean Sea and may have also visited the Maltese coastline. The theme of the exhibition is extinction, and apart from various and varied material pertaining to the Great Auk there will also be an emphasis on Maltese species of flora and fauna that have became extinct or are facing extinction. The exhibition includes original prints, publications, newspapers and other paraphernalia from the National Collection and a private collection. Opening hours: 09:00 – 17:00. Entrance is included in price of ticket to the museum. UNTIL FEBRUARY 16 A Libyan Lama Exhibition of contemporary Libyan artists at St James Cavalier, Valletta, organised in collaboration with Noon Arts. UNTIL MARCH 31 Maltese Maritime Graffiti Exhibition of historical graffiti at the Malta Maritime Museum, Birgu. Scattered around Malta, graffiti are found on megalithic stones, medieval prisons, and on modern buildings such as wayside chapels, parish churches, public buildings and private homes. The exhibition is based on the pioneering research work by the Museums Department former employee Joseph Muscat and his recent donation of various casts of ship graffiti to the museum. A number of salvaged original graffiti will also be displayed, including a large ship. graffito and legend dating to 1766 salvaged from a demolished residence in Zurrieq. PUBLIC LECTURES & CONFERENCES FEBRUARY 19-22 Archaeoacoustics conference An international multi-disciplinary conference at Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa, St Julian's that welcomes academics, researchers, musicologists and non-presenting enthusiasts. Anticipated presentations include performance, discoveries, observations and science from around the world – all focused on the Archaeology of Sound.
