maltatoday, SUNDAY, 9 FEBRUARY 2014 THIS WEEK 40 EURO Media Forum, The U.S. Embassy in Malta and Eden Cinemas presents a spe- cial screening of 12 Years A Slave followed by a discus- sion. The film begins at 14:30 (1430) on Feb- ruary 10 at Eden Cinemas, St Julian's. 12 Years A Slave is a 2013 British-Amer- ican historical drama film and an adap- tation of the 1853 memoir of the same name by Solo- mon North- up. In 1841, Northup, a New York S t a t e - b o r n free African A m e r i c a n , was kidnapped in Washing- ton, D.C., and sold into slavery. He worked on plantations in the state of Louisiana for twelve years before his release. Fleur Vella and US Embassy of- ficer Bill Woityra will delve into the economic and social reasons for the abolishment of slavery in some states and not in others. The discussion will also provide insight into the film's depiction of slave life. The discussion will also focus on how the American sys- tem per- mits social mobility from the lowest classes to the very top. The audience is invited to participate through comments and ques- tions. Please contact Eden Cinemas for bookings on 23 710400 or www. edencinemas.com.mt.
