The 59th annual Eurovision Song Contest 2014 will be featuring the participation of 37 countries to be held in Denmark. In a run up to this event Malta organizes its own Eurovision Song Contest so as to choose the partici- pating song for the final night. In- deed, the ROCS Group sponsored the Malta Eurovision 2014 that was hosted by Gianluca Bezzina, Ira Lo- sco and Moira Delia at the MFCC Ta' Qali on February 7 and 8. This event is the most viewed event on TV throughout the whole year with an approximate audited audience exceeding the 250,000 figure. "ROCS has always been a keen supporter of the Maltese talent. As a group,we recognise such an important event within the Maltese culture and it is our pleas- ure to sponsor this prestigious and awaited event for our islands for the fourth year running" stated Colin Aquilina, ROCS Group Head of Fi- nance and Business Development. The Ministry for Gozo is focusing on policies to strengthen Gozo's unique elements. This morning, Minister for Gozo Anton refalo announced the ini- tiative 'Travel to Gozo Weekend- Valentine Special'. This innovative initiative is being undertaken in col- laboration with the Bank of Valletta and with the support of Gozo Chan- nel, Gozo Tourism Association and the Gozo Business Chamber. Gozo Channel fares will be lowered by almost fifty per cent between Feb- ruary 14 and 16. Specifically, pas- senger fares are lowered from €4.65 to €1.50, while fares for non-com- mercial vehicles will decrease from €15.70 to €8.50. These tariff prices will apply to all journeys between Friday 14 February from 7.15pm to the first trip Monday at 1.30am. Joe Cordina, Gozo Channel's chairperson announced that the company will operate according to expected demand and if necessary run shuttle service as well. Joe Cor- dina mentioned how successful the company has been, in being able to reduce the losses by €600,000 with- out affecting the service. During 2013, Gozo Channel vessels carried 118,500 passengers and 43,500 ve- hicles more than the previous year. Gozo Tourism Association Chief Executive Officer Joe Muscat and Managing Director of the Gozo Business Chamber Michael Grech said that once again the tourism sector and businesses in Gozo have backed the government in such schemes, since such measures al- leviate the impact of seasonality ef- fects during winter months. During this weekend, 38 tourist establish- ments will participate through this scheme by offering various special offers that could be found on www. visitgozo.com. Amongst partici- pants of accommodation services, there are hotels and farmhouses in Gozo, many restaurants scattered all over the island mall, shops, tour- ist attractions and even establish- ments offering authentic typical experiences and products. In his address the Bank of Val- letta Chairperson John Cassar White stated that, "as the leading financial services provider and an active corporate citizen, Bank of Valletta has always held Gozo in high regard. We are eager to assist wherever possible to generate eco- nomic growth on this island. This is why we are pleased to be associ- ated with this initiative, which aims at attracting business to Gozo dur- ing the low season." Speaking about the Bank's involvement in Gozo, he said, "Over the past years, the Bank has undertaken various initiatives to help promote sustainable devel- opment in Gozo, not only from an economic perspective but also in terms of supporting social and cul- tural initiatives." In his closing remarks, the Min- ister for Gozo Anton Refalo men- tioned how the government is geared towards attracting tourists specifically to the island of Gozo also by incentivising local internal tourism. In this regard the govern- ment is determined to give back the internal tourism sector the impor- tance it deserves.
