RENOWNED Maltese painter
Raymond Pitre is back on the scene
with a new exhibition at Palazzo
De Piro, Mdina which will run un-
til the end of March.
'Documentary', which has been
germinating in the artist's mind
for a while, features 10 three-di-
mensional works in thick water-
colour paper cut-outs.
The project has a long history.
Pitre had originally began to sketch
out ideas for the project way back
in the mid-1960s. 'Documentary'
is among a number of projects that
the painter has abandoned, only to
pick up again, over the past four
decades.
Pitre – who held a retrospective
exhibition of his works in 2002 –
recommenced work on the paint-
ings that would eventually form
part of 'Documentary' in 2008,
fleshing out his original ideas. The
works began to take shape gradu-
ally, as a result of months of hard
work, as Pitre experimented with a
variety of vibrant colours.
Crucially, none of the works
forming part of the 'Documentary'
exhibition are abstract. Instead, all
of them pivot on the multi-layered
overlay of the human creative
process, using paper, the very frag-
ile and light material.
The exhibition was put together
with the help of John Paul Azzop-
ardi, and in conjunction with Pitre
launching his new website: http://
www.raymondpitre.com.
The exhibition is supported by
the Malta Arts Fund
