A study on atmospheric particular mat- ter (PM) 2.5 and 10 – the tiny pieces of solid or liquid matter that are smaller than 2.5 micrometres, such as soot parti- cles, or less than 10 micrometres – found no particular increase in emissions in a pre-2013 and post-2013 study on air qual- ity in the most affected towns of Marsax- lokk and Birzebbugia, which live under the shadow of Delimara power station. Yesterday, former finance minister To- nio Fenech accused Labour's pre-election claim that Delimara was "a cancer fac- tory" as false accusations that vindicated the former administration's decision to run the new diesel turbines on HFO. Labour famously dubbed Delimara's new turbines a factory of cancer, due to the controversial selection of Danish firm BWSC and Vassallo Builders Group to supply turbines running on HFO, rath- er than make a switch to gas. The new government will build a new 200MW plant that will run on liquefied natural gas and convert other diesel en- gines to gas, in a bid to provide energy at cheaper prices to consumers and busi- nesses – an electoral pledge for Labour. The baseline analysis of all data from 2009 to 2013 by the Air Quality Manage- ment Resource Centre (AQMRC), of the University of the West of England, Bristol has revealed no evidence to suggest that Delimara was contributing to elevated concentrations of particulate matter at Birzebbuga or Marsaxlokk due to HFO. AQMRC was appointed by the Malta Environment and Planning Author- ity (MEPA) and a monitoring committee composed of local council represenat- tives, following a competitive tendering process, to assess the impact of using HFO at Delimara Power Station. Delimara currently runs eight medium- speed combined cycle diesel engines on HFO. Parliamentary secretary for justice Owen Bonnici yesterday confirmed that MPs in the House Busi- ness Committee would decide on the way forward so that the House debates the impeachment of Farrugia Sacco. The Malta Olympic Committee president was found to have misbehaved by staying on as MOC president in breach of the judiciary's code of ethics, and for exposing himself to the public's mistrust in an undercover sting by Sunday Times of London re- porters posing as ticket resellers. But the decision by the Commission for the Admin- istration of Justice, which did away with the need for a new investigation after the original impeachment motion was declared 'dead', can be expected to be contested by the judge and his legal team. The original motion was declared to be invalid af- ter the Speaker of the House confirmed protests by Farrugia Sacco that the motion's proposer, Lawrence Gonzi, was no longer an MP.
