Arriva failed to pay €1.3 million in penalties JURGEN BALZAN ARRIVA, the former public trans- port operator, has so far failed to pay €1,332,650 out of the €1.8 million in penalties issued by Transport Malta in 2013, transport minister Joe Miz- zi said. In reply to a parliamentary ques- tion by opposition MP Toni Bezzina, Mizzi said that to date Arriva had only paid €487,550 in penalties is- sued by the regulator. Moreover, the minister said that a further €808,650 in penalties which were issued between August and December, were not issued by Transport Malta following the sus- pension of the articulated buses. He explained that Transport Malta had intended to issue the penalties once the negotiations between the two parties ended. In January, government entered into an agreement with Arriva's mother company, Deutsche Bahn AG Group to transfer the entire company to Transport Malta and a new national company. The national public transport company that took over the Arriva Malta operations earlier this year, Malta Public Transport Services Ltd, has already absorbed €7.9 mil- lion in total debts when it took over Arriva Malta for a nominal €1. The financial statements tabled in the House of Representatives, sub- mitted on 2 January 2014 by Price- waterhouseCoopers, paint a dismal picture of the state of the public transport operator. The accounts show that Arriva was forecasting an operating loss of €4.3 million for 2013 but the company actually reg- istered a loss of €18.7 million as of November 2013. No more 'breakfast' for MEP hopeful Ellul launches MEP campaign LABOUR candidate for the Europe- an Parliament Charlon Gouder will tomorrow make his last appearance presenting the One TV breakfast show. Since Labour's election to power in March 2013, Gouder has been work- ing as spokesperson for Jose Herrera, the Parliamentary Secretary for Lo- cal Government and Culture. Now, the former One TV journalist is trying to follow in the footsteps of an established Labour tradition: like Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, once also a TV journalist, Gouder is aim- ing at a seat in Brussels. With former Labour leader Alfred Sant and former One TV colleague Miriam Dalli widely believed to be favourites for MEP, Gouder will be facing cut-throat competition for a third seat in the European Parlia- ment. His next presence on the television screens will be on Smash TV, where he hopes his candidature will gain traction with an interview-style pro- gramme. FORMER Brandstatter and Playmobil CEO Helga Ellul yes- terday launched her campaign for MEP, with the slogan 'My experience, our Europe, your Future'. Ellul said she wanted to strengthen the link between theory and hands-on practice in employment. She said she will strive to provide more in- formation to young people on range of jobs available and the qualifications required. The PN candidate said she will work for a regulatory framework for social enterprise, and on de- veloping sectors that are strong in 'Maltese know-how', to en- sure a healthy and diversified spread of economic activit y. "We all have a dut y to vote, whatever our views about the European Union. Through these elections, you have a say in the vision of the European Union," Ellul said. "This is not an easy task in politics so it is an honour for the Nationalist Part y to be able to attract people like Helga El- lul," Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said. "We are proud to have Helga on the PN list."
