maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 19 FEBRUARY 2014 18 'BUILDING National Networks in the EU to fight Match-Fixing' was the main subject chosen for the seminar organized by Maltco Lotteries Ltd. in collaboration with the Institute for International and Strategic Relations (IRIS) and the European Lotteries. For the very first time in Malta, Maltco Lotteries has taken up such initiative in order to bring together a number of local sports represent- atives and Government Stakehold- ers to discuss the phenomenon of match fixing and the importance that this subject brings along. The project was supported by the Eu- ropean Commission. This project started around a year ago and so far more than 20 seminars have been organized in most European Countries. The aim behind such an ambitious project was mainly to raise aware- ness and educate sports adminis- trators and national stakeholders about the match-fixing threat and the potential betting-related risks, to identify best practices at a na- tional level, to promote a coop- eration among all stakeholders, to safeguard sports integrity at a na- tional level and to set the basis of EU national networks of stakehold- ers involved against match-fixing in order to facilitate a harmonised international framework. The Seminar was opened by the Hon. Stephan Buontempo, Parlia- mentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport and by Ioannis Katakis, Maltco's C.E.O. The Seminar was attended to by representatives from various Sports Associations and Stakeholders mainly the Malta Football Associa- tion, the Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport, The National Olympics Commit- tee, the Malta Police Force, the Malta Football Players Association, the Malta Refereeing Department within the MFA and the Lotteries & Gaming Authority. The main speakers for the event were Pim Vershuuren who is in charge of the IRIS Peace & Sport programme and he also represents IRIS at the Permanent Consultative Council of the Intergovernmental Commitee for Physical Education and Sport of UNESCO. Christian Kalb was the second speaker. Kalb is the Director of CK Conusulting and is a specialist of the gaming in- dustry and the sports organizations. He is very involved in the defence of the sporting values especially in good governance, fight against matxh fixing and doping. The last speaker was Sarah Lacarriere, an integrity officer with Sportaccord. She is responsible for developing and updating tools and information related to the Global Programme to Stop match fixing in sport, particu- larly the e-learning programme on how to prevent match fixing from destroying anyone's career. Events Maltco Lotteries Ltd actively supports the fight against match fixing It's a dog's life MEMBERS of the Banif Sports & Social Committee loaded the company car with dog food and drove up to the Is- land Sanctuary in Marsaxlokk to donate pup goodies collected by employees. They were regaled with much wagging of tails and slobbery kisses from the over enthusiastic four legged furry friends. The Bank's Sports & Social takes a philanthropic angle to its activities, in order to reach out to voluntary organisations which depend on donations to survive. New San Michel 33cl bottle exclusively for the Vodafone Malta Marathon 2014 SAN Michel has been the official water for the Malta Marathon, the largest and most followed athletic activit y in Malta, for a number of years. For this year's edition, which takes place on Sunday, 23 February, Simonds Farsons Cisk plc, bottlers of San Michel, has produced a new 33cl bottle spe- cifically for the event. This com- pact, easy-to-hold bottle will be handed out to participants at the various water stations throughout the event. "We have taken note over the past editions that a lot of the San Michel water handed out to the athletes, previously in a 50cl bot- tle, goes to waste due to the fact that most of the runners normally only drink sips of water from the bottles provided at the water sta- tions and the rest is thrown away. In our efforts to continuously im- prove and contribute to waste re- duction, this year we have invest- ed in developing and producing this smaller bottle with the sole aim of reducing water wastage. An added benefit of course is that the smaller bottle is also very handy to carry while running which should also please the thousands of par- ticipants in this very popular an- nual event," commented Ms Karen Scicluna Calleja, Brand Executive for San Michel. The San Michel 33cl bottle is exclusive to the Vodafone Malta Marathon and is not available for sale.
