maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 26 FEBRUARY 2014 Sport 22 MOTORSPORTS BOXING Muscat wins ASMK Autocross as Camilleri's win Motocross LAST Sunday 23rd February AS- MK organized the 9th Autocross event and the 3rd Motocross races of the National ASMK - Pasta Poi- atti 2013/14 Championships at the ASMK Ta Qali Motorsport Com- plex. Following intensive training on the newly modified motocross track the Camilleri Brothers won both Class A and Class B. In Class A Clayton riding a 250cc KTM battled and won the three Heats ahead of Paul and Trever Muscat who ended with 60 points each. Paul was declared in 2nd place due to better race heats placing. Paul rides a KTM and Trever rides a Honda in the 250 cc Class A limit. Class B winner Kyle Camilleri who is also one of the youngest riders in this class rides an 85cc Suzuki won the day's event and registered his 3rd consecutive win in this championship. Karl Micallef on a Honda 250cc won 2nd in Class B while 3rd place was won by Romeo Micallef on anoth- er 250cc Honda. One must realize that Kyle rides the smallest capac- it y bike in class but his riding is so good. Only Manuel Muscat on his Opel Corsa and Vince Farrugia on his V W Polo won all the three Heats on the day. They qualified for the Class A finals. Philip Joe Vella on a Vauxhall Nova, Melo Zammit on a Ford Escort, Gordon Johnson on a Peugeot 205 and Ryan Scerri on an Opel Corsa also qualified for the Class A. As the Red Lights turned Off Muscat and Farrugia accelerated hard to the first Right Hander. Muscat took the lead right to the Finish. Vella who followed close by retired during the third Lap due to a mechanical failure while Scerri was also forced to retire due to a broken driveshaft. Zam- mit, Farrugia and Johnson drew the attention of all present. All expected some kind of overtaking on the remaining Laps from Far- rugia and Johnson but all hopes vanished as Muscat cross the Fin- ish Line on the 9th Lap. Zammit, Farrugia and Johnson places 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. The Class B Autocross was com- posed of Lennie Cortis on his Fiat Uno, Kurt Sammut on his Ford Ka, Josef Grech on a Ford Fiesta, Jean Paul Grech on a Peugeot 106, Philip Grima on a Ford Escort and Christian Mark Galea on his Fiat Ritmo. As the Start Lights turned Off Christian raced and took some lead which he increased lap after lap right to the Finish. Josef Grech and Kurt Sammut followed close by. A few moments later Cortis followed Christians Ritmo and ahead of the rest on track but Sammut and Grech added pres- sure on Cortis. This forced Cortis to loose control and hit the t yre safet y barriers and overturned his car on the track side. From there on no one competitor could overtake each other while still on track. Galea won the Class B ahead of Sammut and Grech. Grima and JP Grech finished in 4th and 5th place respectively. More ASMK events are planned for the next weekends. The Trials bikes will be competing at the Tor- ri Falka Quarry (L/o Mgarr). Trials being a non speed event demon- strate the expertee of the riders to overcome on natural obstacles on a pre-planned route. This is a very interesting sport and attracts both spectators and photographers on site. This 2nd March Competition starts at 9.00am and entrance for the general public is for free. This event is made possible on this site by kind permission of Hardrock Ltd and Thomas Smith Insur- ance. The American even asked fans to vote on whether he should face Khan or Maidana next on social media, despite the fact Khan had already signed a contract putting him in line for the fight. And now Bolton fighter Khan, who has not fought since suffer- ing a scare in a victory against Julio Diaz in Sheffield last April, has re- vealed his disappointment with the way Mayweather's camp has han- dled the protracted process. "Following the announcement by Floyd Mayweather that he will be facing Marcos Maidana on May 3rd I would like to clarify my situ- ation for my fans and members of the media," read a statement from Khan. "Despite having signed my part of the agreement to fight Floyd in early December, I've been preparing my- self for some time that the match-up with him wasn't going to happen, as I announced on Twitter a few days ago. Therefore, this announcement did not come as a surprise. "I am, however, very disappointed with Floyd and his team for not pro- viding any explanation as to why he delayed the announcement for so long and ultimately avoided the fight with me. "Clarification, if he was not fight- ing me, would have allowed me to look over my options and pursue another path, rather than the ul- timate delay to my career this has caused. "It has been a very frustrating pe- riod as I'd been due to fight in De- cember against Devon Alexander, however, I was strongly advised to not take this fight as I would be fac- ing Floyd this May - and therefore signed my side of the contract on this belief. "Floyd was keen to engage with the fans and so decided to let them choose who he should fight in his next bout. I clearly won his official poll, by a significant margin, but for unknown reasons he decided to ig- nore the fans' vote and failed to keep his word, disappointing many fight fans who took the time to vote. "I genuinely wish Marcos and Floyd all the best for their fight - two great fighters." Khan has been rebuilding his ca- reer with back-to-back wins over Carlos Molina and Diaz after his loss to Danny Garcia in July 2012 and is now hoping to announce his next opponent within the next 10 days. "As a team we have now moved on and are looking at different op- tions," he said. "I've been training very hard since my last fight. I'm a fighter who wants to face the very best out there and have never ducked any opponent. "I'm focused and ready for my next outing - we currently have a few op- tions on the table at the moment and my team are working along- side Golden Boy Promotions to an- nounce my next fight within the next 10 days. "I can't wait to get back in the ring and am determined to put on a great show for my loyal fans who have waited a long time to see me back in action - and I'm very excited about what's yet to come this year. Thank you for all your continued support." Amir Khan: Not happy with the Mayweather camp
