Events 48 maltatoday, Sunday, 30 March 2014 Emirates to go to Jordan three times daily EmiratEs will add a third daily flight to Jordan from 1 august, rep- resenting a further ramping up of services to amman after Emirates' flights to Jordan went up to twice daily in October 2012. the new EK 905 will depart Dubai at 2155hrs and arrive in amman at 2359hrs. the return flight, EK 906, will depart at 0345hrs and touch down in Dubai at 0745hrs. a com- bination of Boeing 777 and airbus a330-200 aircraft will be used, as with the existing operation. Flying with Emirates means hav- ing a selection of up to 1,700 chan- nels of movies, tV programmes, games and music to enjoy during the flight. Cabin crew from around the world are on hand to look after customers, serving gourmet-chef prepared food along the way. in Dubai, passengers can ben- efit from one of the world's lead- ing airport facilities, terminal 3. the Emirates-dedicated terminal is light, spacious and stress-free and includes Concourse a, the world's first purpose built a380 concourse. inside, First and Business Class travellers can enjoy the world's larg- est lounges. Passengers transferring in Du- bai have a choice of more than 140 Emirates destinations to choose from, including Jakarta, shanghai, seoul, Guangzhou, Beijing, manila, Hong Kong, sydney, Los angeles and Boston. a ninth U.s destina- tion, Chicago, will be added from 5 august. Emirates, winner of 'World's Best airline' at the 2013 skytrax awards, is known to be particularly generous with luggage allowances. travellers can check-in 30 kilogrammes in Economy Class, 40 kilogrammes in Business Class and 50 kilogrammes in First Class. Auditions for FameLab Malta competition announced WHO will be the next FameLab malta winner? auditions for FameLab will be held on saturday 5 april 2014 from 10am onwards at mCast institute of applied science in Paola. Organised by the British Council, in collabo- ration with the National student travel Foundation (NstF) and the research, innovation and De- velopment trust (riDt) of the University of malta, FameLab is a competition to find the best new talent in science communication. FameLab offers young research- ers, early career scientists, and science students an opportunity to inject enthusiasm into science- related subjects and communicate science to wider audiences. sci- ence-related subjects can refer to engineering, medicine, dentistry, health science, computer science, maths and other similar scientific fields. One can also send an email to the organisers to make sure that s/he is on the right track. at the auditions, contestants will have only three minutes to impress a panel of judges by giving an en- tertaining and original talk that is scientifically accurate but also engaging to a non-scientific audi- ence. Each judge will assess the finalists' presentations on three qualities: content, clarity and cha- risma. Participants aged 18 years and over can register online on www.famelabmalta.org.mt. the top ten malta finalists will get the chance to take part in a weekend masterclass in Gozo on 3 and 4 may 2014, conducted by an expert in media and communica- tion skills Dr Quentin Cooper. a popular voice of science in the UK, Dr Cooper writes and presents hundreds of programmes, includ- ing over a decade fronting Britain's most listened to science shows, the live weekly material World on BBC radio 4. He is also the regu- lar host and masterclass tutor for the UK and international finals of FameLab. the winning prize for the na- tional winner consists of a fully covered trip to the UK to compete and represent malta in the Chel- tenham science Festival from the 3 to 8 June 2014. this is the second time that mal- ta is participating in FameLab, an international competition span- ning 20 countries across Europe, asia, africa and the United states in the search for the next top sci- ence communicator. the FameLab malta initiative is in line with the University's trust, riDt, highlighting the value and usefulness of science and research. riDt drives to support research activity and to seek additional funds to expand the University's research studies. FameLab malta also enjoys the support of the Parliamentary sec- retariat for research, innovation, Youth and sport, microsoft, aPs Bank, Vodafone, and stage malta. Past winners of FameLab have gone on to travel the globe, per- form in festivals and feature on national tV and radio, and many combine public-facing activities with on-going research. British Airways launches daily Gatwick - Malta flights British airways, one of the largest and most modern airlines in the world, with of fleet of more than 280 aircraft, flying to over 175 dif- ferent cities in 75 countries, today recommences its scheduled flights from malta to London Gatwick. British airways will transport up to 145 passengers daily on its Boeing 737 and airbus 319/320 aircraft. Peter simpson, British airways' director Gatwick, said: "We are delighted to re-launch services to malta, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the medi- terranean, in advance of the peak summer holiday season. We believe the convenient timings, together with our range of highly competi- tive fares, generous hand baggage allowances and great on board service will make the route attrac- tive to tourists, business travellers, as well as those visiting relatives and friends." this service will offer excellent connectivity between malta and London especially for business travellers, and will thus support the growth of the conference sector from UK and beyond. the timings of the flights will be convenient, with morning or late afternoon departure times from London Gatwick, depending on the day of travel. additionally, British airways is offering free seat selec- tion as well as airport, online or mobile check-in. For customers travelling light- ly, a hand-baggage only ticket in economy class will start from €54 one-way, including all taxes and charges. For customers with lug- gage, British airways also offers a generous allowance of 23kg, along with one piece of hand baggage and one handbag or laptop for economy ticket holders.
