36 RESTO OF THE WEEK FOOD U Bistrot The older I get the harder it seems to keep those love handles from taking over, more so the love han- dles so lovingly packaged in restau- rant food. Who wants to be careful about what you eat when you're paying good money for a food ex- perience! As people become more health conscious – yes, even in Malta, though it is taking us longer to get there than our European coun- terparts – dining out often means straying from your healthy regime to indulge in creamy, buttery after- noons, fuelled by wine and adding inches to your waistline. However this need not be the case. Some restaurants are start- ing to think of the health-conscious and including meals that don't nec- essarily mean straying from your normal routine. U Bistrot is one such place. Everything on the menu is made from fresh and succulent ingredients that change according to the seasons. Whether you're just stopping for a quick sandwich or a heartier meal, there is something on the menu sure to entice. Try some of their creative salads that include honey glazed salmon, succulent rosemary chicken or an eclectic mix of colour and flavour in an all-Maltese 'Bidwi salad' featuring typical Maltese in- gredients like roasted peppers, mar- rows, aubergines and goats cheese served on a chunk of Maltese bread baked in a limestone oven. If you are really watching your weight then pick one of Marion Mizzi's selection. Well known throughout Malta for her ability to turn the plumper portion of the population into confident beach babes, U Bistrot always has a se- lection of her recipes that are por- tion controlled to ensure the right amount of meat, carbs and veggies to stick to a skinny girl's diet. These items change weekly to keep the regulars happy. Of course, like any good café, there is also something for the not-so-weight-conscious. Fantastic snacks for a quick bite to eat during your lunch break include sandwich- es and wraps. Their sandwiches include the regular classics like a BLT along with beautiful creations of their own like a bacon, Brie and chicken sandwich served with a fruity jam. To drink there are some fantastic juices and smoothies to tantalise your taste buds and delicious des- serts that work just as well with a meal as they do as an afternoon snack or maybe even breakfast. To top it all, you can enjoy all of this in the beautiful Balluta Bay, basking in the spring sunshine and watching the world go by. If you need something to eat but can't get away, U Bistrot also do free deliveries for orders over €15 to Sliema and St Julian's area. U Bistrot Rachel Zammit Cutajar takes a look at a restaurant and brings a recipe, wine and delicacy of the week. The extraor- dinary environment and microclimate of Tuscany are the key of the production of wine with a unique character and drinkability. Remole is a remarkably versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a wide range of cuisine: from Oriental traditions to classic Mediterranean dishes featuring grains and meat, such as cured meats and sausages, barbecued or boiled meats and vegetables. The 2012 Marchesi de' Frescobaldi Remole Toscana begins with loads of fruit -- plum, blackberry and raspberry predominantly with licorice and black pepper highlights. Soft tannins and a dry fruity finish with good length round things out. A great choice for pizza night, just invite enough friends to finish the bottle off as it didn't fare so well on day 2. Don't let that stop you from trying this one though, especially the fruit lovers! Exclusively Imported by Charles Grech & Co. Ltd, Valley Road, B'Kara T: 2144-4400.
