THIS WEEK 16 MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE UNTIL APRIL 26 International Spring Orchestra Festival This year's artist line up for the International Spring Orchestra Festival 2014 edition includes Brian Schembri and Lucia Micallef who will be teaming up with the European Union Chamber Orchestra, Clare Ghigo and Charlene Farrugia who will give an exquisite recital of songs by de Falla, Obradors and Kurt Weill, Argotti Ensemble led by Maria Conrad, and the versatile Cosmos Wind Ensemble. The evening concerts will be held on April 22-26 at the Manoel Theatre from 20:00 onwards, while the lunchtime concerts at Sala Isouard at 12:30. Tickets are free except for Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evening concerts. APRIL 26 Plato's Dream Machine: Ghera The folk-pop band will be launching their debut album, 'Ghera' at the MITP Theatre, St Christopher's Street, Valletta. The band will be collaborating with local poet Adrian Grima. Tickets are at €7, €10 including album. The event and album production are being supported by the Malta Arts Fund. APRIL 26 Explicit + Infinite Loop The two rock bands will be performing at Coach and Horses, Valley Road, Msida from 21:00. Entrance is free, but any donations will be sent to St Joseph's home. APRIL 26 The Beatles '1' Album Performance of the Beatles's landmark '1' album by an ensemble of Maltese musicians at SmartCity, Xghajra, as part of this year's national anniversary celebrations. Performers include Gianluca Bezzina, Ivan Grech from Wintermoods, Pawlu Borg Bonaci from Fakawi, Matthew James Borg from Red Electrick, Gaia Cauchi, Errol Sammut from Airport Impressions are amongst the 45 local musician line up. Doors open at 20:00. Entrance is free. APRIL 26, 27 Burlesque Inquisition The Dazzle Troupe return with another burlesque show at Nigret Night Club, Rabat at 21:00. The show – featuring comedy sketches, music and dance – will take an 'inquisition' set up, as a pair of inquisitors will be judging the performers and determining whether they will be damned or saved. Performers on the night include: Alex Vella Gregory, Joseph Zammit, Vee Stivala, What's their names Theatre, Becky D'Ugo, Miriam Calleja, Marie Claire Pellegrini, Marie Claire Camilleri, Kevin Canter, Sarah Lanzon, Rambert Attard, Joe Depasquale and Yannick Massa. EXHIBITIONS UNTIL APRIL 30 Retrospective by Norbert Attard Retrospective exhibition by artist Norbert Attard at Gozo Contemporary, 11, Mongur Street, Gharb, Gozo. Art works spanning 40 years will be on display. These include Attard's early paintings, drawings and lino cuts from the formative years, limited edition prints (including the Walled Cities, Mihrab and Kimono series) and abstract paintings from the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and photographic prints and sculptures, from his most recent conceptual phase. LITERARY EVENTS TONIGHT Lejla ta' Għaraq u Kapuċċini Kesħin Evening of readings from the latest publications by Inizjamed – 'Għaraq Xort'Oħra' and 'Klijenti Antipatiċi u Kapuċċini Kesħin' – at Il-Forn Art Gallery & Wine Bar, Birgu. Doors open at 20:00. APRIL 28-30 Book Festival on Campus Literary festival taking place around the University of Malta campus organised by the Ghaqda tal-Malti in collaboration with the National Book Council. The festival will run each day from 09:00 to 15:00, with some events taking place after 19:00. Some of Malta's leading publishers and distributors will be having their book stand: Sierra Book Distributors, Horizons, Faraxa Books, Sensiela Kotba Soċjalisti, Bronk Productions, and Agius and Agius. Books by other publishers will be available, while The National Council for the Maltese language will also have a stand. There will also be a number of activities on different parts of the Quadrangle, some of which will involve established writers, distinct critics and students. FIREWORKS FESTIVAL APRIL 25-30 Malta International Fireworks Festival Thirteenth edition of the Malta Fireworks Festival, taking place across Marsaxlokk, Bugibba and Valletta. On April 25, the event will take place in Marsaxlokk, focusing on the International Pyromusical Competition and featuring steyrFire (Austria), Brezac artifices (France), Pyrotex Fireworx (United Kingdom), St Joseph Fireworks Factory (Zebbug, Malta). On April 26 the National Fireworks Competition will take place in Bugibba, featuring Banda Sant'Andrija Fireworks Factory (Luqa), St George's Fireworks Factory (Qormi), Santa Marija Fireworks Factory (Mgarr) and Banda l-Unjoni St Andrew's Fireworks Factory Luqa, Malta. The event will close with a grand finale at the Valletta Grand Harbour on April 30, with a pyromusical show celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Malta's accession to the European Union. More information: http:// www.maltafireworksfestival.com/ PUBLIC LECTURES APRIL 26 Museums and art galleries as critical public spaces Public lecture at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta by Darlene Clover, University of Victoria and Peter Mayo, University of Malta at 14:00. Using selected examples, this presentation will map some key 21st century socio-educational initiatives and debates in public art galleries and museums, illustrating these institutions as contested, problematic, challenging, yet often progressive, critical and creative pedagogical spaces, which, against a backdrop of tradition, political intervention, and rising social problems, mirror concerns in the field of adult education and bring new foci and practices to broaden understandings of social education, learning and action. Organised as part of the MUZA project, and serving as the plenary session of the 6th International Conference of the Popular Education Network (PEN). APRIL 29 Women in science: From skin to lungs Public lecture by Dr Susanne Krauss Etschmann and Dr Sanja Kezic at Italian Cultural Institute, Valletta at 19:30.
