THE Maltese government is seeking the return of a massive €20 million investment in oil pollution preven- tion equipment made by the former administration, after a private com- pany entrusted with the equipment did not return the equipment. The agreement was brokered by former home affairs minister Tonio Borg – today European Commis- sioner – in July 2007, for the transfer of special equipment and materials used specifically in fighting oil pollu- tion and worth up to €20 million, to the company Alpha Briggs Mediter- ranean Limited. The equipment had been specifi- cally purchased after the Italian gov- ernment expressed its concern with Malta over the very serious repercus- sions of an oil disaster emanating from the extraordinary bunkering activities being carried out offshore Malta. But under the agreement with the Civil Protection Department, the stockpile of equipment and materi- als it had purchased was handed over to the Alpha Briggs for warehousing and maintenance.
