maltatoday, SUNDAY, 11 MAY 2014 Sport 44 FOOTBALL Vittoriosa's Guerrero is the BOV Player of the Month – April 2014 Vittoriosa's Guerrero wins last award of the season VITTORIOSA Stars' Oscar Dario Guerrero Alvarado wrapped up the BOV Football season with his sec- ond consecutive BOV Player of the Month award. The skilful Colombian, with a knack for wriggling through the op- ponents' defence was a major factor in Vittoriosa's bid to try to keep their spot in the BOV Premier League. With three consecutive victories over Floriana, Rabat and Qormi, where Guerrero scored twice, Vit- toriosa came short in the do-or-die encounter with Naxxar. With a tally of 15 goals in the BOV Premier League and two 'BOV Player of the Month' trophies on his mantelpiece, it has certainly been a successful season for Guerrero who is rumoured to be returning to the local football scene the upcoming season. Joseph Chetcuti, Manager of Bank of Valletta's Cospicua Branch pre- sented the BOV Player of the Month Trophy for April 2014 to Guerrero. England too strong for Malta Malta 0-3 England MALTA lost 3-0 to England in its first match in Group A of the UEFA Under-17 Championship at the National Stadium. With this victory England are the early leaders in Group A. As predicted, England were the dominant side from the start. Malta could not match the physical and technical prowess of an England team in their ninth U17 finals alone. John Peacock's side moved straight to the top of Group A, sending out an ominous warning in the process, thanks to two goals from the sensational Patrick Roberts and one from Adam Armstrong. Netherlands 3-2 Turkey THE Netherlands managed de- feat Turkey 3-2 to collect their first three points of the tourna- ment. Maarten Stekelenburg's team looked destined to suffer a simi- lar fate to the 2005 final, where they lost to the same opponents, when the prolific Enes Ünal put Turkey in front. However, a second-half surge, featuring goals from Calvin Ver- donk – a penalty – Abdelhak Nouri and Bilal Ould-Chikh, gave the 2011 and 2012 winners the perfect start to Group A. Turkey's late second was merely a scare. Tomorrow, Malta will be facing the Netherlands at 15:15 while England take on Turkey at 11:15. Both matches will be played at the Gozo Stadium. Germany 1-1 Switzerland GERMANY and Switzerland had to settle for a 1-1 draw to share the points in their first match of the tournament. Switzerland substitute Boris Babic scored eight minutes from time to cancel out Benjamin Henrichs's opener, though the Swiss still re- quired a penalty save by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, after Remo Arnold's dismissal, to secure an opening-day point. Scotland 0-2 Portugal PORTUGAL scored a goal in each half to defeat Scotland 2-0. Goals from Renato Sanches and Luís Mata helped Emílio Peixe's men to a hard-fought win and early Group B leadership. After Switzerland and Germany played out a draw in the section opener, the leadership was up for grabs and it was 2003 winners Por- tugal who took the initiative thanks to Renato Sanches's first-half effort from 25 metres. Luís Mata capitalised on a Robby McCrorie mistake late on to seal the points, meaning Emílio Peixe's men can advance to the last four with a victory against the Swiss on Mon- day, while Germany next await the Scots. Tomorrow, Switzerland take on Portugal at 11:00 while Germany face Scotland at 18:00. The Nerazzurri were celebrating Javier Zanetti's final Serie A match at San Siro after 19 years, but the crowd were silenced when Giuseppe Biava bundled in after just two minutes. In- ter were level soon after when Rodri- go Palacio raced onto a fine pass from Mateo Kovačić, who repeated his feat with a stylish assist to Mauro Icardi's sweeping finish. A Palacio tap-in then handed Inter a 3-1 half-time lead and paved the way for Javier Zanetti's introduction to a standing ovation. The second half brought a fine goal for ex-Lazio man Hernanes, who whipped the ball into the bottom-left corner to indel- ibly mark his first match against his former club since his January trans- fer. Earlier, Hellas Verona FC let slip a two-goal lead in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Udinese Calcio. An add- ed-time goal from Emmanuel Badu completed the Zebrette's remarkable comeback after Luca Toni's penalty and Emil Hallfredsson's volley had put the hosts 2-0 up. It was a sensa- tional reply by 36-year-old Antonio Di Natale that stole the limelight however, as the Udinese captain con- trolled a cross, swivelled and volleyed in his 190th goal in Serie A.
