THIS WEEK THE concert season at the Ma- noel Theatre closes in style with this joint production between the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and Manoel Theatre. MPO Prin- cipal Conductor Brian Schembri returns with the MPO to con- duct a magical programme with repertoire from the Classical era, featuring two of the prime expo- nents of the period – Mozart and Beethoven, on May 30 at 20:00 with a repeat performance on May 31. This evening showcases two of Mozart's and one of Beethoven's most popular and loved works. Mozart's overture to The Magic Flute which, as often happened with many composers, was fin- ished a few days before the pre- miere in 1782. This is followed by another of Mozart's great works, the clarinet concerto in A, which was completed just two days be- fore the premiere of the Magic Flute. The concerto, which re- mains one of the most exquisite compositions of all time, features clarinettist Godfrey Mifsud as the soloist, considered to be one of Malta's most refined solo and chamber musicians. The evening rounds off in dra- matic style with Beethoven's fifth symphony in C minor, which has one of the most famous opening bars equally know to the classical die-hards and the less uninitiated. Of the opening notes Beethoven is reputed to have said, "Thus Fate knocks at the door". Fate knocks it is true but he is not overwhelmed by it, as the work reveals. A pre-concert talk is open to all ticket holders, starting at 19:15 hrs. This event coincides with the release of X-Men Days of Future Past screening at Eden Cinemas. Created in 1963 by the dream team of writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, the X-Men would go on to become Marvel's flagship 'mu- tants' – possessing extraordinary superpowers but ostracized from society because of their advanced genetic make-up. From the 1960s and their late 1970s re-emergence, their platform for socially and po- litically relevant storytelling up to the present, has helped establish the X-Men as one of the globe's most exciting franchises. Comic book researcher David Pace and film re- searcher Justin Camilleri will delve into how and why the X-Men rose to prominence to become among the most popular superhero characters of our time. They will also give an insight into how the various mutant char- acter relationships that appeared in comic book series from 1963 to the present, have all woven together over the decades to create classic storylines that bring to the fore the dazzlingly complex and fascinating world of mutants. The speakers will also trace how the characters have been adapted into the media of tel- evision, including the groundbreak- ing 1992 animated series and the blockbuster feature films. The event will also feature an X- Men quiz, with the opportunity to win great prizes. The event is also being supported by Eden Cinemas; Science is Culture, Malta Film Net- work and the Good Causes Fund. Entrance is free however limited seating is available.
