In a statement, the police said that they were informed that a fight was in progress in the mentioned street, however they could not verify the report when on site. Later on, the health authorities informed the police that a man with serious injuries had just entered the A & E Department. It is believed that the man suffered head injuries after being hit with an object. Following thorough investiga- tions, the police spoke to another two foreign nationals who are as- sisting them. A magisterial inquiry into the case has begun. Romanian charged with assaulting neighbour FLORINEL Nitu, 45, born in Ro- mania and residing in Bugibba, pleaded guilty to charges of assault. Prosecuting inspector Joseph Busuttil told the court how, in the early hours of Monday morning, the accused assaulted a certain Stoika Myleva who lives in the same block of apartments as he does. The victim suffered slight injuries in the wake of the assault. When police apprehended Nitu, he assaulted the officers. Nitu was charged with assault, in- flicting slight injuries and disturb- ing the public peace. He admitted to the charges but denied he assaulted any officers. Legal Aid lawyer Simon Micallef Stafrace requested bail. However the prosecution objected, arguing there were civilian witnesses still to testify in the case. Moreover, the accused was wanted by the police in the past, who spent a month search- ing for the man. Magistrate Natasha Galea Scib- erras granted bail to the accused against a deposit of €500 and a per- sonal guarantee of €5,500. Inspectors Joseph Busuttil and Nicholas Vella prosecuted.
