Anyone visiting Teatru Manoel in the last few months would have no- ticed a significant embellishment to the ongoing refurbishment of the Theatre; a brand new carpet cover- ing the stairs, landings and all the boxes. Generously sponsored by MSV Life, the project covers 600sq.m. and is a new gold and green pat- terned carpet. "The design was cre- ated in-house and we chose a style that would be in harmony with the Baroque fabric of the theatre, el- egant but discreet at the same time and, moreover, in a colour that is in synch with the rest of the theatre's décor," said Michael Grech, Chair- man of Teatru Manoel. Recently classified by CNN as one of the 15 most spectacular theatres in the world, the Manoel sees liter- ally thousands of patrons coming through its doors during the nine- month performance season as well as yet more thousands of tourists who visit this historic building all year round. To accommodate this heavy traffic the new carpet is a woven, high qual- ity, heavy-duty carpet made of 80% wool and 20% from Axminister's collection Walk of Fame and was produced and manufactured in Bel- gium. It conforms to EU standards and is certified with a fire retarded classification with a specific under- lay that reduces the impact of sound. Ray Attard, Teatru Manoel's Chief Executive Officer, stated, "The project took three months to com- plete and, in order to limit disrup- tion was undertaken during the Baroque Festival when most of the events were held outside the theatre. We are working hard to restore the elegance and grandeur which so be- fits this great national gem, which is as much Maltese as it is part of our international heritage". David G. Curmi, CEO of MSV Life, said, "As a socially and cultur- ally responsible company we are ex- tremely pleased to be able to support the local cultural and arts scene by contributing towards the ongoing restoration of this major cultural hub that is Teatru Manoel". Teatru Manoel's current per- formance season has now come to an end, however, it remains open over the summer months for daily tours. The 2014-2015 performance season starts again in October with an eclectic and exciting programme of music, dance and drama. More information at www.teatrumanoel. com.mt. Inspired by the coastal towers, artist Janet Grech's collection 'Bulwarks of Fortitude' of- fered viewers a set of paintings which captured the towers from various perspectives. The ex- hibition was held at the 17th Century Wigna- court Tower in St Paul's Bay in collaboration with Din l-Art Helwa and Banif Bank (Malta) plc. Built by the knights, the coastal towers were strategically constructed as a defence for our islands. Although some are quite small in size, the towers served to guard the coast and raise the alarm in the event of imminent threat. The positioning of these towers was planned as such so that one could see both neighbour- ing towers, which acted as an early warning system against invaders. As soon as one tower spotted a suspicious event, a fire signal was started, which was picked up by the neigh- bouring towers, in so doing carrying on the message. "Through her art, Janet manages to give life to the towers using different colours to en- hance the natural elements of the surrounding areas," said Simon Grech, Head of Corporate Services at Banif when visiting the exhibition. "Her work serves to commemorate Malta's fortresses! In addition, a percent- age of the artist's earnings will be passed on to Din l-Art Ħelwa – all these factors put together made it easy for us at Banif to support the initiative," he concluded. "I am grateful to all those who visited the exhibition and to Banif who has ac- cepted to sponsor my initiative," said Janet Grech. "I hope that the message oozes out from each and every stroke on my canvas: Do not let us be neglected, we were and still are very powerful sym- bols to this Island."
