maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 9 JULY 2014 22 Sport WEIGHTLIFTING ATHLETICS CRICKET Weightlifting International Club tournament THIS year's ZKC Weightlifting Inter- national Club tournament saw 6 local clubs participate out of 64, from differ- ent parts of the world, with 397 male and 115 female competitors battling for titles. The best results from the lo- cal clubs came from Cottonera Males, who placed 15th out of 43 clubs, and Starmax Females placing 12th out of 40 clubs. The best individual placing from the Maltese athletes came by way of Mal- colm Camilleri, of the -56kg category, lifting a total of 121kg and by Kieran Mifsud of the -94kg category, both placing 1st in the under-15 and 2nd in the under-17 categories. Kirstin Colei- ro also achieved a good result, placing 3rd in the under-15 category, by lifting a total of 109kg all of Cottonera WL centre. In the Seniors section, the best re- sult came from Noel Coleiro, of the -94kg category, who placed 13th out of 65 with a total of 240kg, followed by Martin Mifsud of the -105kg category who lifted a total of 222kg placing 17th out of 48 athletes both from Cotton- era WL centre. Other athletes making significant results where Ryan Agius from Heavy-light-weights club placing 27th out of 75 lifting 215 kg in the 85kg category lifting the total of 215kg. Trailing behind him was Chris Schi- nas from Tarxien Club placing 14th out of 29 in the -69kg category lifting a total of 170kg. The best female result was achieved by Nicole Gatt 53 kg category of Star- max placing 2nd in the U-17, other good result was from a newcomer athlete of Mcast Paola, Hayley Mizzi scoring higher points then rivals from Great Britain, Australia and New Zea- land. All Maltese weightlifting clubs are now focused on the next local com- petition organized by MWA Malta weightlifting Association on Sunday 13th July at the cottonera sport com- plex from 9.30 am onwards. Nicole Gatt Kristin Coleiro Diane Borg and Kevin Moore conditioned in the 200m by unfavorable wind conditions A select group of Maltese sprinters participated on Sunday in the 35th Resisprint International at Chaux- de-Fonds, Swizerland. La Salle AC's athlete Diane Borg registered another excellent result first by making it through to the B-Final (12.23sec, -1.4) in the 100m and then going on to place 8th (out of 39 athletes) with yet another sea- sonal best time of 11.98sec (+1.1). In incredibly unfavorable wind condi- tions, the national 100m & 200m champion, then went to place 9th in the 200m with a time of 24.93sec (-3.8). Running in the 200m, National record holder Kevin Moore also had to face the strong winds to finish in 11th place overall from 52 athletes in a time of 21.60sec (-2.9). The winner of the first Heat, Isaac Makwaia from Botswana, had better wind conditions and went out to reg- ister a fantastic time of 19.96sec after winning the 100m in 10.10sec (-0.1). Two other Maltese sprinters also registered close to seasonal bests in the 100m. National 100m champion, Steve Camilleri, ran the distance in a time of 10.99sec (0.1) whilst Andy Grech registered a time of 11.14sec (0.2). Gillard and Ali guide Marsa to victory THE CricHQ MCA Summer league commenced with a restructured league - this year three teams will be playing, while the Overseas C.C has changed its name to the Maraud- ers C.C. The league will be of twenty over games, winning teams will earn twelve points , and in the event of a tie points will be split. Bonus points will also be awarded depending on how many runs a team makes and on how many wickets are taken. The local rule of batsman retiring after facing thirty balls will be applied ( returning if all other batsman are out). The Marauders C.C won the toss against the Marsa C.C and decided to bat first. Simon Lavendar had them of to a flyer hitting twenty runs from fourteen balls before being caught at deep mid wicket. He hit four bounda- ries along the way. Clyde Roussouw made a plucky seventeen runs before getting caught. After such a great start , a batting slump took place with Paul B radley, Garret Kempff, AJ Thomp- son and Sean Byrne making twelve runs between them. Mike Caruana chipped in with fourteen valuable runs, While Tom Atkins (seven runs not out) and Owen Jones (five runs not out) saw out the remaining overs. To help their cause there were eight- een extras which took the total to 93 for the Marauders. For Marsa Mat- thew Gillard was the pick of the bowl- ers taking three wickets. Ramadeep Singh, Ravi Sharma, Bikram Arora and Chris Naudi all took a wicket each. The question was how long will it take Marsa to make the runs. They were not banking on great bowling from Jayden Roussouw who bowled five overs taking one wicket for thir- teen runs. At the other end Sean Byrne was creating havoc with his five overs taking two wickets for twenty runs. In these first ten overs the Ma- rauders were definitely on top and was capped off with a great fielding effort from Simon Lavendar who swooped on a ball and threw down the stumps from twenty meters away which had John Grima (seventeen runs, three boundaries) run out. The second half of the innings be- longed to the Marsa team with Derek Ali making twenty four runs which included two fours and a six which were all in one over which changed the shape of the game drastically. Andy Naudi played an unusual innings only hitting one four on the way to twenty seven and retiring. His retirement came with only a run two win. Ravi Sharma (ten not out) facing hit the winning runs with a boundary. The Marauders played well enough to keep the Marsa team till the nineteenth over for victory. The victory earned the Marsa team thirteen points while Marauders earned one point. Next Saturday a friendly game will be played starting at 10:30am. Matthew Gillard
