THIS WEEK 14 MALTA ARTS FESTIVAL – WEEK ONE JULY 16, 17 King Lear Globe eatre performance of William Shakespeare's King Lear at Pjazza Teatru Rjal at 21:00. Featuring Joseph Marcell – aka Geoffrey from e Fresh Prince of Bel Air – in the title role. Entrance is at €15, concessions €10. JULY 19 Hide and Seek Dance production by Spanish choreographer Iván Pérez at Fort St Elmo at 21:00. MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE & THEATRE JULY 17-31 Violin and Friends International Music Festival Violin and Friends International Music Festival (17-31 July, 2014) is offering a professional and expandable platform from baroque to new music, and to showcase its origins and pioneers, supporting young musicians by making it possible for them to present their output to a wider audience. e goals are: Establish a community and family event that will generate a sense of pride, joy and accomplishment, giving wider recognition to local and foreign artists; Provide an opportunity for the youth to develop their talents in the performing arts; Offer a venue in which the social and artistic dynamics will create a welcoming ambiance amongst all VFIMF's participants and visitors; Promote the historical past and continue to develop performing arts and the cultural richness. For more information log on to: http://www. vfimf.com. JULY 17–19 Malta Jazz Festival 24th edition of the Malta Jazz Festival taking place at Ta' Liesse, Valletta Grand Harbour. Featuring will host some of the biggest names in jazz, including Tom Harrell Colors of a Dream and Brecker Brothers Band Reunion 'e Heavy Metal Bebop Tour' . Featuring both local and international performers. Other highlights will include Mehliana (featuring Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana), who mix jazz with electronica to create a trance-laden music while the French- born musician Laurent Coq combines Caribbean/Creole influences with modern jazz piano in his Laurent Coq Dialogue Trio. Also featuring Claudio Baglioni, Bryn Terfel and Leona Lewis. Joseph Calleja will be accompanied by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the guidance of Mro Paul Bateman. Featuring street art, live music, DJ acts, film screenings and food and drink stalls. Musicians include Vermicelli, Juno and the Wolf, ree Stops to China, for strings inn, Hedon Crew (DJ set), Laavemuax (DJ set), Marcus Arvidsson, Errormantics, Massacre House Party, Areola Treat, Mega Fun, Jane Doe, e Velts, MANA TAPU, Chris Radium (DJ set), Gedz D (DJ set), Incmode (DJ set) and FDM Crew (DJ set). Street artists include Sofles and Bond. Programme runs until 17:00 to 23:00 on each of the days. Organised in collaboration with Hedon Crew. JULY 23-30 The Merchant of Venice Annual summer Shakespere production by MADC at San Anton Gardens, Balzan at 21:00. Directed by Joe Friggieri. Cast includes Philip Leone Ganado, Coryse Borg, Steve Hili, Francesca Briffa, Alex Gatesy Lewis, Maxine Aquilina, Annelise Abela, Joe Zammit, John Marinelli, Luke Mercieca, Joe Despasquale, David Chircop, Chris Spiteri, Rambert Attard, Anton Saliba, Janelle Caruana, Diandra Anne Mamo and Stephen Galea. VISUAL ARTS CONTINUES BY APPOINTMENT Retrospective by Norbert Attard Retrospective exhibition by artist Norbert Attard at Gozo Contemporary, 11, Mongur Street, Gharb, Gozo. Art works spanning 40 years will be on display. ese include Attard's early paintings, drawings and lino cuts from the formative years, limited edition prints (including the Walled Cities, Mihrab and Kimono series) and abstract paintings from the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and photographic prints and sculptures, from his most recent conceptual phase. FESTIVALS JULY 18-20 Marsovin Summer Wine Festival Annual wine festival at Hastings Gardens, Valletta from 20:00. Featuring live music performances by Tribali, Airport Impressions, e Creepers, e New Victorians, e Shh, Julian Drury and Skarlet. JULY 20-27 Kinemastik International Short Film Festival e annual festival of local and international short films at Herbert Ganado Gardens, Floriana. With this edition, the art-collective NGO Kinemastik celebrates its 10th anniversary, which will be crowned by a screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky's e Dance of Reality, with Jodorowsky's son – and the film's lead – Adem Jodorowsky in attendance. Apart from the short film festival itself – which will take place over July 26 and 27 – the festival will also feature talks and a workshop for children.
