Events 39 maltatoday, SUNDAY, 20 JULY 2014 Farsons Beverage Imports is organis- ing a special wine-tasting dinner with the internationally renowned wines of Hugel et Fils at the TemptAsian Res- taurant at The Palace Hotel. The night will be hosted by Alsace and Hugel wine expert, David Ling. The Hugel family has been produc- ing wine since 1639. They are pioneers in wine making in Alsace, having even written some of the wine producing laws for the region. The late Johnny Hugel was described by wine expert Tom Stevenson as "the single most important person in the development of Alsace wine industry throughout the 20th century." Alsace wines are mainly white, and are produced using the noble varieties of Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Muscat. Today the business is run by the 12th generation of the family - and will be shortly joined by the 13th. Despite the winery's modest size, Hugel wines en- joy a worldwide reputation. They are present in practically every great res- taurant in France, and almost 80% of "Hugel" wines are exported, to more than 100 countries. The Hugel family was elected by its peers to membership of the "Primum Familiae Vini", an association of 12 family wine companies in the major wine producing regions of the world. The dinner will be held this coming Wednesday at 8:30 at the TemptAsian Restaurant at The Palace Hotel in Slie- ma. "For the first time in Malta, the TransLog Awards will be recognising excellence in the transport, logistics and supply chain indus- tries, all crucial sectors for Malta's econom- ic growth and providing employment for well over 25,000 persons," said SSM Group Director Alex Borg, the organisers of the awards. "These Awards will further raise Malta's profile as a centre for transport and logis- tics, while being an excellent networking opportunity, not to be missed by active in- dustry members," Borg said. The Award categories are based on in- ternational benchmarks and values to rec- ognise industry excellence in 12 key areas. Interested companies are invited to write to: info@ssmgroup.org. Participation in the Awards is free of charge. HSBC Malta's Head of Commercial Bank- ing Michel Cordina said, "These awards have our full support as they provide a deserved recognition to a vital sector in Malta where we can see growth potential in the future. This prestigious event helps create aware- ness and stimulate this important industry in Malta and the Mediterranean region. "As such, the TransLog Awards comple- ment our own initiatives to support growth in Malta's potential to become a logistics hub This initiative forms part of the Malta Trade for Growth Fund where we dedicated €50 million towards stimulating interna- tional trade." "Going global is increasingly critical for Maltese companies if they are to remain competitive. With its global connections and expertise, HSBC is uniquely positioned to help companies in Malta achieve success on the global level," said Cordina. A supply chain is the journey of a product or raw material from its source to the con- sumer or end-user. Every item on the market comes to the consumer via a supply chain. Logistics is that part of the supply chain process that plans, implements, and con- trols the efficient, effective f low and storage of goods, services, and related information from the point of origin to the point of con- sumption in order to meet customers' re- quirements. A good transport system in logistics activi- ties could provide better logistics efficiency, reduce operational costs, and promote serv- ice quality. A well-operated logistics system could increase the competitiveness of both government and enterprises, an important factor that is even more essential in the case of an island economy. The deadline for participation in the first edition is Thursday 28 August 2014. The awards ceremony will be held during a gala dinner on Friday 10 October 2014.
