THIS WEEK 14 MALTA ARTS FESTIVAL – WEEK THREE JULY 23 TO 25 Ir-Ritorn Performance by eatre Anon at Maritime Museum, Birgu at 21:00. Based on Homer's Odyssey, Ir-Ritorn employs their characteristic visual style and various storytelling techniques they retell the story of the Greek hero Ulysses trying to get back to his home after the Trojan War. Entrance is at €10, free entrance for children 12 years and under upon presentation of ticket. e production, presented in Maltese, was originally commissioned for Żigużajg International Arts Festival for Children and Young People 2013. Suitable for all audiences. JULY 23, 24 Kathak lecture and demonstration Kathak is a classical dance form indigenous to northern India. It developed under the influence of both Hindu and Muslim cultures. Kathak is characterized by intricate footwork and precise rhythmic patterns. With its origins as an oral tradition, it has now evolved into both an expressional and virtuoso dance form of significance in 21st century international dance. Isabelle Anna, a French-born dancer based in New Delhi, will give the lecture and demonstration. Entrance is free for this event, to be held at the St James Cavalier theatre at 17:00. JULY 23, 25 AND AUGUST 2 Pjazza Kino ree nights of cinema under the stars at Pjazza Teatru Rjal. is year's selection is entitled 'Sea Stories' and brings together three sea-themed, award winning European films to Malta. With the participation of the filmmakers, Pjazza Kino will bring people together to watch the films, discuss them and bring new insights. Curated by the Director of 'Simshar' , Rebecca Cremona. Entrance is free, events begin at 21:00. JULY 24 Phoenix 'Trumpet and electronics' performance by Markus Stockhausen at the music room of St James Cavalier, Valletta at 21:00. Entrance is free. JULY 26 Upclose – video opera Cello concerto by Michel van der Aa at the Ballroom in the Grand Hotel Excelsior, Floriana at 21:00. e traditional interaction of soloist and ensemble is reflected by a mysterious, mirror reality seen on film. When the piece begins, a solo cellist and string ensemble sit on the right of the stage; on the left stands a large video screen. On the screen we see an elderly lady sitting among an arrangement of chairs and music stands that parallels the real-life version on the other side of the stage. It soon becomes clear that this is only one of a variety of interactions across a hall of mirrors created by the soloist, ensemble and film. Entrance is at €15, concessions €10. JULY 25-27, 30, AUGUST 1 Il-Kappillan ta' Malta L-Istaġun tat-Teatru Malti presents Nicholas Monsarrat's bestselling novel e Kappillan of Malta in an adaptation for the stage by Immanuel Mifsud at Fort St Elmo, Valletta at 21:00. is spectacular performance will be held at Pjazza d'Armi at Fort St Elmo. It will feature Italo-Maltese actor Pino Scicluna. Produced by Sean Buhagiar and Mario Philip Azzopardi. Entrance is at €15, concessions €10. THEATRE JULY 23-30 The Merchant of Venice Annual summer Shakespeare production by MADC at San Anton Gardens, Balzan at 21:00. Directed by Joe Friggieri. Cast includes Philip Leone Ganado, Coryse Borg, Steve Hili, Francesca Briffa, Alex Gatesy Lewis, Maxine Aquilina, Annelise Abela, Joe Zammit, John Marinelli, Luke Mercieca, Joe Despasquale, David Chircop, Chris Spiteri, Rambert Attard, Anton Saliba, Janelle Caruana, Diandra Anne Mamo and Stephen Galea. VISUAL ARTS CONTINUES BY APPOINTMENT Retrospective by Norbert Attard Retrospective exhibition by artist Norbert Attard at Gozo Contemporary, 11, Mongur Street, Gharb, Gozo. Art works spanning 40 years will be on display. ese include Attard's early paintings, drawings and lino cuts from the formative years, limited edition prints (including the Walled Cities, Mihrab and Kimono series) and abstract paintings from the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and photographic prints and sculptures, from his most recent conceptual phase. FAIRS JULY 27 Patches Summer Fair e 15th edition of this much- anticipated event, Patches brings together makers of beautiful things to people who appreciate the quality, handcrafted and locally designed. Stalls will include clothing, ceramics, accessories, wearable art, home décor and food. A variety of live music acts will begin after 18:30. e Fair will be held at the Upper Barrakka Gardens, Valletta, from 16:30 onwards. FESTIVALS JULY 20-27 Kinemastik International Short Film Festival e annual festival of local and international short films at Herbert Ganado Gardens, Floriana. With this edition, the art-collective NGO Kinemastik celebrates its 10th anniversary, which will be crowned by a screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky's e Dance of Reality, with Jodorowsky's son – and the film's lead – Adem Jodorowsky in attendance. Apart from the short film festival itself – which will take place over July 26 and 27 – the festival will also feature talks and a workshop for children. JULY 25- AUGUST 3 Farsons Beer Festival e much-awaited festival brings together a variety of musical genres across several stages in Ta' Qali. Featuring over 70 beer draught installations, 13 branded bars, 15 food stalls and over 50 local and international artists, the popular open air festival provides a unique setting for all round entertainment. Entrance is free and the live acts begin at 20:00.
