THIS WEEK 14 MALTA ARTS FESTIVAL AUGUST 2 Pjazza Kino ree nights of cinema under the stars at Pjazza Teatru Rjal. is year's selection is entitled 'Sea Stories' and brings together three sea-themed, award winning European films to Malta. With the participation of the filmmakers, Pjazza Kino will bring people together to watch the films, discuss them and bring new insights. Curated by the Director of 'Simshar', Rebecca Cremona. JULY 30, AUGUST 1 Il-Kappillan ta' Malta L-Istaġun tat-Teatru Malti presents Nicholas Monsarrat's bestselling novel e Kappillan of Malta in an adaptation for the stage by Immanuel Mifsud at Fort St Elmo, Valletta at 21:00. is spectacular performance will be held at Pjazza d'Armi at Fort St Elmo. JULY 31 – AUGUST 1 Triple Bill A triple bill of duets at Pjazza Teatru Rjal. e programme is intended to create a link between emerging Maltese practitioners and established international artists or companies. ere is also an exciting emphasis on male dance artists, from dancers and choreographers. Duets are made up of: Brenda Lee Grech (Malta/Glasgow) & Victor Zarallo (Spain/Glasgow), Mavin Khoo & Luke Divall (UK) and Gregory Maqoma (South Africa) & Roberto Olivan (Spain). AUGUST 2 MPO Closing Concert e closing concert of the Malta Arts Festival will feature the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Mro Brian Schembri, at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. e programme includes Elgar's cello concerto featuring cellist Alexander Kniazev and Petrouchka by Igor Stravinsky. e concert will also premier a new work by Maltese composer Karl Fiorini. e event begins at 21:00, Dress circle €20, stalls €15, concessions €10. JULY 26 – AUGUST 22 Paġni - Pass the Parcel Paġni, an exhibition in the main hall at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Valletta, is a result of the project Pass the Parcel, which was organised with Y.O.U.R.S. (Young Offenders Unit Rehabilitation Services) and Female residents at Corradino Correctional Facility. is project started back in October 2013 and is supported by Fondazzjoni Ċentru Għall- Kreattività and Premju tal-President Għall-Kreattività. JULY 12 – AUGUST 24 Ġgantija 2013 Project - Final Exhibition Ġgantija 2013 Project is an ongoing- multidisciplinary work embracing music, visual art and literature. e project aims to dialogue with Ġgantija, a Unesco World Heritage Site situated on the island of Gozo through the use of contemporary media. Curated by Dr Vince Briffa, this artistic initiative is a group effort between composer Mariella Cassar, artist Victor Agius and the international acclaimed Maltese writer Immanuel Mifsud. e exhibition is located in the Upper Galleries at St James Cavalier. MARKETS AUGUST 2 Malta Artisan Market A free event at Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar, visitors can expect a variety of local arts and crafts, food and gifts. e Palazzo's Italian chef will be preparing special treats on the day and the Luna Restaurant will be taking bookings for the evening. Entrance is free and the market is open between 18:00 and 23:00. FESTIVALS JULY 25- AUGUST 3 Farsons Beer Festival e much-awaited festival brings together a variety of musical genres across several stages in Ta' Qali. Featuring over 70 beer draught installations, 13 branded bars, 15 food stalls and over 50 local and international artists, the popular open air festival provides a unique setting for all round entertainment. Entrance is free and the live acts begin at 20:00. AUGUST 2 - 31 The Bieganski Art Festival A month-long festival at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, commemorating 100 years from the outbreak of WWI and celebrating art in all its forms. e festival would feature: 75 local and foreign artists with paintings depicting WWI 47 local and foreign artists, exhibiting their works 120 paintings from the Bieganski collection Master Artist Ray Pitre 9x7 ft collection 80 sketches and painting from French trench artist Galey.
