Events 40 maltatoday, Sunday, 17 auguSt 2014 Malta selected as airline operations training base A consortium of aviation training partners announced the launch of an aviation training organization, "Alpha One", earlier this week. Malta was selected as a training base for professional airline training activi- ties because of Malta's high stand- ards in aviation training, its level of English language and for Malta's European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) credentials. The country's position at the cross- roads between Europe, Africa and the East makes for an ideal location as a hub for a number of specialist aviation training programs. At an inauguration event held at Safi Aviation Park, VIP lounge, Al- pha One CEO Philip Apap Bologna highlighted Malta's potential as a specialised aviation training hub where all stake holders in Malta's aviation cluster had a role to play. Professor Ing. David Zammit Man- gion from the University of Malta and Cranfield University UK went on to add that Malta had the poten- tial to develop as a leading centre for aviation training and to make a name for itself on the global stage thanks to Malta's culture and to the special capabilities of its people. Alpha One Course Director Tomislav Zorman explained how Alpha One will bring together highly qualified and expe- rienced aviation training profession- als from different backgrounds in the field of aviation training to offer operators the highest standards of training for airline ground opera- tions personnel. " We aim to offer Alpha One as a first choice for Flight and Ground Operations staff training for Sched- uled and Business Aviation Opera- tors. We are filling in places for our introductory Aviation Foundation Courses and for our Flight Dispatch Courses scheduled for September 2014 with trainee applicants from Europe, the Gulf and Africa. This is an excellent opportunity for our trainees to enter the exciting world of aviation and take up a career in a number of aviation industry's opera- tions specialist areas. " Malta Business Aviation Associa- tion President concluded by saying that the significant increase in activ- ity that Malta was seeing in this sec- tor was thanks to the high standards and good reputation Malta enjoyed on the international stage. Bugeja welcomed Alpha One's initiative in developing much needed specialist training services in support of Mal- ta's fast growing aviation sector. Information and application forms for Aviation Foundation Courses and Flight Dispatcher Courses are available on request by e-mail to info@alpha1.aero. High fashion and fabulous fun at the Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa in Attard The Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa in Attard hosted its first- ever Summer Fashion Party on 31 July – a five-star bonanza of high fashion and gourmet food which brought together Malta's fashion crowd and numerous other VIPs. The highlight of the night was the 22-strong collection present- ed by designers Charles&Ron, whose boutique is located with- in the hotel's lobby. C&R's high summer collection was inspired by the Maltese sum- mer and created for the Maltese summer. The collection ranged from rainbow-themed tops and dresses to a breath-taking f lo- ral finale, and garnered a well- earned standing ovation from many of those in the audience. Meanwhile, the model's make- up was designed by the Athenae- um Spa's team of professional therapists under the direction of Mary Randon, while the hair was the work of Dean Gera Hair Care – both of these brands are also based in-house at the Cor- inthia Palace Hotel & Spa. Guests were then treated to sumptuous canapés and hors d 'oeuvres, crafted by the award- winning Corinthia Palace kitchen brigade, and wines by Casavini. All this was presented against the backdrop of the his- toric Villa Corinthia and guests entertained by the sounds of the Big Band Brothers. A raff le in aid of the Beyond the Moon foundation was then drawn by American Ambas- sador Gina Abercrombie-Win- stanley, with four magnificent prizes up for grabs. These in- cluded two return f lights to London (donated by Kirton & Co) and a three-night stay at the luxurious Corinthia Lon- don, a €600 Raymond Weil ladies' watch kindly provided by Edwards, Lowell Co. Ltd, a €200 hair treatment from Dean Gera Hair Care and a chic Pan- haligon's Gift Tin kindly donat- ed by Franks. The raff le successfully raised over €1,000 and that money will be donated to Beyond the Moon – a charity focused on giving terminally-ill children and their families a dream holiday. In addition, the Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa also used key online innovations to bring this new fashion collection to as many people as possible in real- time. It ran a live posting session of the catwalk show on its offi- cial Facebook page, reaching an incredible 42,677 people from all over the world over the span of two days. "We are always keen to give our guests and clientele something new and exciting to enjoy," says David Woodward, the General Manager of the Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa. "This is why we wanted to bring Malta's f lourishing fashion scene to the Corinthia Palace for the night and I am pleased to say that it was a resounding success on all accounts. "I'd also like to thank everyone who contributed to the €1,100 donation for Beyond the Moon – the money will go towards a great cause, and we're happy to know that while everyone was enjoying themselves, those who might be going through a tough time will have the opportunity to leave their worries behind thanks to this charity, if only for a little while."
