maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 20 AUGUST 2014 16 Events GasanMamo assist the less fortunate through Karibu Malta GASANMAMO is helping Ka- ribu Malta volunteers by sponsoring their travel insurance. Karibu Malta is a young organisation, set up only two years ago with the main aim of carrying out various activities throughout the year raising funds to implement work with the less for- tunate. This year the organisation will be buidling two classrooms at the Daughters of the Sacred Heart in Ruiru, Kenya and laying tiles in a church close by. The volunteers will also be spending some time teach- ing and carrying out fun acitivies with the children in the area. "Many children in developing countries do not have access to edu- cation, live in poor conditions and therefore suffer because of these low living standards," said Julian Mamo Managing Director at GasanMamo. "We are helping Karibu Malta in their work to help these children live better lives." Those wishing to make a donation to go towards this year's initiative can do so by bank transfer on BOV account number 40021597390 or by cheque made payable to Karibu and posted to 1, Lourdes Square, San Gwann. Further information on the organi- sation can be obtained by visiting their Facebook page on www.face- book.com/KaribuMalta TH e Famous Grouse 40-year- old blended malt has secured another win after taking gold in the International Spirits Chal- lenge 2014 Design and Packag- ing Awards. The prestigious award is just the latest win for this rare blend after scooping the prestigious Trophy Award – the highest accolade – at the International Spirits Challenge 2013 for the Distillers Blended Malt category last July. It also won gold at the Inter- national Wine & Spirit Competition in the Deluxe Blend category. The award-winning blend enjoyed further success at Drinks Interna- tional's Travel Retail Awards 2013 when it was named 'Best Luxury Drinks Brand of the Year' and a Tro- phy Winner, as well as taking gold for Travel Retail Exclusive at The Spirits Masters Awards 2013. Only 276 decanters of the 40-year- old blend were created and launched exclusively to Travel Retail in 2013 before becoming available to mar- kets last November. The elegantly crafted decanter was created in partnership with Scot- tish designers Timorous Beasties. Hand engraved with a bespoke design of the brand's icon, the red grouse, nestled amongst beautifully detailed foliage, the decanter is completed with a Scottish silver stop- per, and cased in a luxury wooden gift box. This marks the third time that The Famous Grouse has worked with the design team at Timorous Beasties, having commissioned a limited edi- tion gift carton in 2009, followed by a limited edition gift tin in 2010 to mark 30 years as Scotland's favourite whisky. Van Kan, a South African na- tional, has been operating in the tour- ism industry for over 30 years. He is a graduate of Les Roches International School of Hotel Management, Swit- zerland and has worked within Inter- Continental Hotels Group since 1985. The hotels he has managed include the InterContinental Phoenicia, Bei- rut and the InterContinental Al Bus- tan Palace, Oman. His more recent appointments include the InterConti- nental Shenzen and until recently the Fairmout the Palm, Dubai. Here in Malta the challenge will be very different. InterContinental Malta, opened in 2003 has now es- tablished itself both locally and in- ternationally as a hotel of the high- est quality, delivering exceptional standard of service. Van Kan's pri- mary objective is to, together with his team, position the InterConti- nental Malta as the principle hotel and resort on the islands and to so- lidify its position within the confer- ence market. Van Kan cited that, "Hotels aim to be the most refined expression of the ideals and beliefs of the culture they represent. Here at InterCon- tinental Malta we tie together the exceptional warmth and friendli- ness of the Maltese people with the values of InterContinental, creating a truly enriching experience for all our guests".
