They beat the Leinster Royals 4-0 in the Playoff and went on to defeat the Connaught Rangers 14-8 in the Cup Final. In both games the Athletics played extremely well. Superior fielding and excellent hitting were needed to win both games. On the day the Athletics handled the pressure very well and were worthy winners. Before the medal and trophy pres- entations Joseph Scicluna, of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats, congratulated all the participants for their excellent showing during the three-week long tournament. He went on to thank all the players and their coaches as well as the main sponsors of the Gozo Cup, Jesmond Mizzi Financial Advi- sors Ltd. Jesmond Mizzi remarked on how entertaining the Cup Final turned out to be and was amazed at the team spirit of the finalists. He indicated that it is the policy of his company to sponsor such sporting events par- ticularly those events that encourage youngsters to participate in sporting activities. Mizzi then presented medals to the players of the Leinster Royals who placed third. The Connaught Rang- ers also received medals along with a runners-up trophy. Estelle Scicluna was named as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She was outstanding throughout the tournament. In the Playoff and the Cup Final she was the driving force behind the two excellent perform- ances of her team. Estelle was pre- sented with the trophy for the Gozo Cup 2014 – Tournament Most Valu- able Player by Mizzi. Medals were also presented to the cup winners, 31st Athletics. Before the presentation of the Gozo Cup, Joseph Scicluna, explained that a heavy trophy was selected to be pre- sented to the tournament winners so that no one player would be able to lift the cup without the help of team- mates, since softball is a team sport, it requires a team effort to win. The Athletics were worthy winners because they played well as a team. Gianella Mallia and Estelle Scicluna, co-captains of the Athletics, were then presented with the prestigious Gozo Cup and together lifted the cup to the cheers of their teammates. Successful fundraiser in aid of Maya Universe Academy, Nepal THE Xara Lodge was bursting with positive vibes, smiles and ex- ceptional generosity at the Maya Universe Academy fundraising event on 1 August which fund- raised €10,000. Maya Universe Academy is a social entrepreneur- ial venture that is sustaining itself through volunteerism, agriculture and handicraft products. During her stay at Maya in 2013, Hannah Cremona noticed that some students did not have any snacks during lunch time because their families could not provide them with any, or because they weren't sponsored like other chil- dren, despite Maya's continuous efforts in breaking down differ- ences in castes. During a visit by some local doctors, it was con- firmed that the children are in fact anaemic due to poor diet, resulting in health complications. In view of this, In April 2014 a food program was launched, thanks to a number of Maltese sponsors, whereby students re- ceive eggs three times a week as a source of protein to improve nu- tritional wellbeing and to continue to break down barriers between castes and instil equality and love for all. This project was well re- ceived by the Mayans, however so terribly unsustainable. So ideas for an egg farm became more obvious which will help to maintain nutri- tional wellbeing, increased labour would require more community involvement with the opportunity of admitting their children at Maya Universe Academy in exchange for the locals' labour. Such sustainable projects will help Maya Universe Academy grow and provide education to many children in rural Nepal. "Every- thing we are trying to do encom- passes developing a community in a very different manner, making it sustainable but making it hap- pier too", Surya Karki Nepali Co- Founder, Maya Universe Academy. Special thanks to sponsors Viv- ian Corporation, Red October, AV Warehouse for making this possible and Carla Grima Atelier, Yana's Jewellery for holding a fash- ion show which was sponsored by Models M and NYX Cosmetics as well as The New Victorians and Electro Swing Malta for their en- tertainment on the night.
