Pulis began his competition with a successful 102kg Snatch lift and in the second phase of the com- petition succeeding in his first at- tempt at 130kg Clean and Jerk and also his second 135kg attempt, narrowly missing out on his third and final 140kg attempt due to the technicalities that come with judg- ing the form of the lift. This was unfortunate for Pulis as this at- tempt would have seen the Malta team place higher in the rankings as well as break national records. With a total of 292 points, howev- er, Pulis managed to place higher than competitors from Israel and Turkey. Kieran Mifsud, the youngest athlete of the tournament at age 15, also had his share of misfor- tune by having to withdraw half- way through the competition due to injury in the second Clean and Jerk phase. Having performed his Snatch attempt of 95kg eas- ily, a forearm pain following his convincing first Clean and Jerk of 127kg saw him exit the competi- tion prematurely. It is worth not- ing, however, that this is by far the biggest ever competition for the young Mifsud. The Maltese athletes were under the guidance of Jesmond Caruana. Caruana also was selected to do the technical official duty as the President of the Jury in the women competition. This competition would not have been made possi- ble without the help of Malta Ol- ympic Committee and without the friendship and collaboration with the Serbian Weightlifting Federa- tion. On the same dates, Malta Weight- lifting Federation member Stephen Borg participated in the European Union congress and elections. He was also selected for the duty of technical controller in the compe- tition held in Split, Croatia. RENAULT says it is braced for a spate of engine penalties in the closing stages of the 2014 season. Toro Rosso rookie Daniil Kvyat became the first driver to fall foul of Formula 1's strict new power unit regulations when he used a sixth Renault engine at the previ- ous Singapore round, resulting in a 10-place grid penalty. With more than half of the field on the brink, having used five of at least one of the six separate ele- ments, the French manufacturer's Head of Track Operations, Rémi Taffin, has accepted that there will be more drops. "Reliability will start to play a major role in results at this point in the season since every team and driver has had to mix and match as we have learnt more on the opera- tion of the power unit," Taffin said of the engine situation. "We are, however, fairly at ease on this front since we have commit- ted ourselves to introduce a sixth power unit where needed," Taffin went on to explain. "The picture is a lot clearer now and although it is not exactly ideal to have to intro- duce new parts and take penalties, we can do this at races where the impact will be minimised."
