UNTIL NOVEMBER 7 Maltese Confabulations Multidisciplinary exhibition by German artist Bettina Hustchek at Blitz, St Lucy Street, Valletta. Fragments of Maltese reality are interwoven in the various narrations, forming the basis for artistic storytelling and presenting a body of work that is to be understood simultaneously, not chronologically. Opening hours: 10:00 to 15:00 (Tuesday to ursday); 15:00 to 19:00 (Friday and Saturday). UNTIL NOVEMBER 9 CONSTRUCT An exhibition of paintings by Celia Borg Cardona at St James Cavalier, Valletta. e work on display shows that the painter's steadfast interest in streetscapes and bird's eye views of gatherings of people has now turned into a focus on sweeping, soaring architectural views of Maltese towns, sometimes on correspondingly oversize canvases. COMICS CONVENTION OCTOBER 31, NOVEMBER 2 Malta Comics and Pop Culture Expo Comic book and pop culture convention taking place at the Malta Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta. During the Expo, visitors will be able to attend panels or even meet up with known TV and film personalities. The guest line-up includes Dirk Benedict ('Faceman' from The A-Team), Robert Picardo (The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager) and Sylvester McCoy (the 7th Dr Who and Radagast the Brown from The Hobbit). Maltese-British actor Joseph Gatt will also be joining the fray. STAND-UP COMEDY OCTOBER 18 The Inside Joke Stand-up comedy night at Django Jazz Bar, Republic Street Valletta from 21:00. Hosted by Matt Bonanno and Malcolm Alden, the event will feature nine stand-up comedians, with some first-timers among them. Entrance is free. MISC EVENTS OCTOBER 18 Military Mtarfa Military re-enactment event at Mtarfa – a village linked to the British Forces in Malta. The event will be held from 17:00 till late within the ex-Naval Hospital, nowadays used as a school. The event comprises of various re-enactments such as an air raid simulation, various ceremonial drills and displays, including WWII weaponry and military vehicles and radio communication equipment. The old mortuary, situated at the back of the hospital, will also be open for public viewing. A group of volunteers will also be assembling a large scale cardboard model of the WWI aircraft 'Viper'. In fact this will also be competing in a record attempt for the largest construction of an aeroplane made out of carton paper with the Malta Records. One may also view various die cast model military aeroplanes and vehicles or participate in a live interactive forum about wartime Mtarfa. This year we shall also have a live band playing military and pre-war songs. OCTOBER 18 Hamrun Chocolate Festival Annual event organised by the Hamrun local council, from 18:00 onwards. This event includes: a pageant a grand procession with Knights and the Grand Master's Entourage in epical costumes, information about the history of chocolate, its production and presentation including tasting, promotion and sale of innovative and original chocolate products, art and hobbies exhibitions at the Hobbies Society, local talent including traditional folk music, children's corner including face painting with chocolate, demonstrations of the various uses of chocolate and an exhibition of chocolate sculpting amongst others.as a chocoholic's delight, this annual festival turns the use of chocolate onto an art form. OCTOBER 18 Festa Fuhhar Pottery festival held at Main Street and St Helen's Square in Birkirkara at 18:30. The event will showcase a number of terracotta exhibits together with live demonstrations of the old craft of pottery. During the event visitors will have the opportunity to taste traditional Maltese food and enjoy entertainment by local musicians together with various re-enactment shows.
