maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 12 NOVEMBER 2014 2 News Bormla police outnumbered in 30-strong family quarrel over football match JOHN PISANI POLICE call in RIU to bring situ- ation under control • Six arrests made in family quarrel, three men hospitalised. Police officers and members of the police's Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU) had to intervene to quell a violent quarrel involving over 30 people. The fight erupted outside the Bormla police station, on Pjazza Gavino Gulia. Witnesses said the fight broke out minutes after what seemed to be a family argument between a few people. According to police sources, the two parties involved in the quarrel were described as the Dalli family of Bormla and the Brincat family of Senglea, mem- bers of whom on the previous day had played each other in a football match. An argument that started on the field on Monday contin- ued on Tuesday morning when a member of the Dalli family sought out his rival in Senglea, and assaulted him. The victim subsequently proceeded to the Bormla police station to file a police report. Within minutes, members of the two families ar- rived on the scene, and a full-on fight ensued. District police were outnum- bered and unable to bring the sit- uation under control, prompting a call for the Rapid Intervention Unit to intervene. At least five units from the RIU responded. "At one point everything got out of control. I don't know if there are any people injured," a source at the scene told Malta- Today. Police arrested six men, while another three men were hos- pitalised. It was said that two unidentified aggressors were brandishing metal pipes in the melee.
