However for the first ten minutes it was all aggressive Overseas forwards, nicely marshaled by the cunning kick- ing of Briffa, and they soon built a 6 point lead through penalties. Then suddenly Stompers awoke and started to play their running style across the width of the pitch to launch attack after attack. For some twenty minutes their style was too frenzied as they offloaded wildly, they dominated even with Briffa absent after a yellow card. Holliday should have scored after a fine handling move which he finished by trying to touch down one handed and dropped the ball over the line – for a national team player and coach that was a real no-no. Stompers were also losing effective attacks by giving away silly penalties, but finally MacLister scored a good try after more penetrating running by Stomp- ers and then converted so Stompers took the lead 7-6. This stung Overseas into response, driving and kicking upfield to win a penalty, for Briffa to kick to regain the lead. He missed and you could almost see the wind taken out of Overseas sails. Frankly, after Stivala left the field, the Overseas backs never looked like penetrating. Stompers kept the initiative, wasting a try through failure to pass, but from the ruck drove over for a second try, converted by MacLister to pull out for a 14-6 lead at half time. Early pressure by Overseas was soon smothered by Stompers and after Mupimhadza was yellow carded, cap- tain Camilleri burst through the cen- tre, to score and MacLister converted. With a lead of 21-6 they began to dominate all the running play, and Overseas seemed unable to break away, despite the hard work of the scrum, especially in the tight scrums. Virtual newcomer for Stompers, Jerry Debattista, made a superb debut with a strong run try. Key Stompers play- ers, Attard and MacLister, had to be substituted for injury and the match began to swing back towards Overseas who had a considerable advantage in the set scrum. Heavy territorial pressure by their pack and Harvey drove over from a ruck for a converted try. Stompers replacement Borg made a weak pass and Overseas pressed hard to the line, but desperate Stompers defence held out until Galea cleared with a fine chip. The match was evenly fought until Debattista broke away again and forged, unstoppable down the wing to score under the post. Borg converted and Stompers were building up a formidable lead. The icing on their cake cam with a great burst and try from Holliday, who more than made up for his previous gaffe with an excellent run in for a try. This fine game has really livened up the League which promises a close run competition, although on this form, under Camillieri's captaincy and Holliday's coaching , Stompers may be hard to beat. Irish Referee Killion O'Brien, new to Malta, who also referees in Germany, controlled tha match superbly and will be a great asset.
