GO builds on support for l-Istrina with Citrus Festival sponsorship Emirates takes off to ten new A380 destinations in 2014 Lions Club Sliema helps poorest nation in the world GO is a main sponsor of the Cit- rus Festival, taking place today at San Anton Palace to raise funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund. This sponsorship follows on from the substantial support, which GO recently pro- vided for l-Istrina. This included €32,000 in cash, of which €5,000 came from the GO Cares Employee Fund, as well as the free provision of all the necessary communications infrastructure and technical support required. Today's Citrus Festival will give the public access to the pri- vate gardens of San Anton which are home to 600 citrus trees and will be open from 10am to 4pm. The Palace kitchen will also pre- pare food and desserts based on oranges and citrus products while animation for children and entertainment from various personalities will be provided throughout the day. Josephine Grima, Senior Man- ager – HR Operations at GO and a member of the Employee Fund committee, said, "GO's sponsor- ship of the Citrus Festival shows that our support for the Malta Community Chest Fund is not just a once a year event, even though for many employees l-Istrina means a very hectic Christmas pe- riod, working hard to install and maintain the complex communications infrastruc- ture required. The support which both the Company and employees offer voluntar- ily highlights our willingness to continue to give time and money to those in need." The GO Cares Employee Fund supports several organ- isations and good causes on an ongoing basis. Employees contribute to the Fund vol- untarily by donating a small amount from their monthly salary. Throughout the year this employees' fund is not only utilised to financially support worthy causes but voluntary initiatives are also organised for employees to go on-site to give a helping hand. Express Trailers is once again sup- porting the Lions Club Sliema in its latest initiative – the dispatch of school furniture and stationery to the poorest nation in the world, Burkina Faso. Express Trailers will be transport- ing six pallets of school furniture and stationery items to Mantova, Italy, which will then be redirected directly to Burkina Faso. Located in West Africa, Burkina Faso is also ranked by the UN De- velopment Program Report as the country with the lowest level of lit- eracy in the world despite its efforts to improve its literacy rate. High school costs approximately CFA 25,000 ($50 USD) per year, which is far above the means of most Burkinabè families. Boys re- ceive preference in schooling; as such, girls' education and literacy rates are far lower than their male counterparts despite policies of making school cheaper for girls and granting them more scholarships. "This situation is practically un- fathomable in a country like ours where education has always been high on the agenda. This is why through this initiative we hope to raise more awareness about this country and its needs especially where its children are concerned," explained Victor Borg Barthet, President of Lions Club Sliema dur- ing a courtesy visit to Franco Azzo- pardi, Chairman & CEO of Express Trailers and David Fleri Soler, Head of Sales & Business Development. "We are happy to be in a position to renew our support to Lions Club Sliema in this commendable initia- tive. Our job on the roads goes be- yond transporting goods. We seek to operate our logistics in a sensible and responsible manner and be- ing sensible and responsible means lending support when most need- ed," said Franco Azzopardi. During the visit, Victor Borg Bar- thet, accompanied by other com- mittee members from Lions Club Sliema, presented a commemora- tive plaque to Express Trailers as an appreciation for the company's on- going support to Lions Club. "In fact this was not the first time that Express has helped the Lions Club. In 2011, your company helped us transport used spectacles, uncut lenses and 450 unused frames to Medico Lions Club of France which is a Lions collection centre who then resent mounted glasses to a number of countries in Africa," added Vic- tor Borg Barthet. Emirates, a global connector of people and places marked a record launch of ten new A380 routes in 2014 and has released a 'mash-up' video that shows the iconic aircraft landing in 10 destinations spanning the globe. "2014 was a record breaking year for our A380 network, and add- ing ten new A380 destinations has given our customers more choice to travel to their favorite destinations and experience what this excep- tional aircraft has to offer. "Our onboard innovations across all three classes continue to wow our customers, and we hope even more travelers will have the op- portunity to experience our indus- try-leading product as we expand our A380 fleet and network," said Thierry Antinori, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Commercial Operations Worldwide, Emirates airline. The Emirates A380 celebrated New Year's in style by taking off to Zurich. It then said 'Hola' to Barce- lona in February, marking Spain's first permanent A380 service. The double-decker then jetted into Lon- don Gatwick in March, followed by Kuwait in mid-July, marking the world's shortest scheduled A380 service. A week later, Emirates upped the ante by introducing the A380 on its Mumbai route, fulfilling on-going demand from travelers in India. Emirates flew its A380 into Frank- furt for the first time in September and Dallas became the Emirates A380's next port of call in Octo- ber. In December, Emirates created aviation history by launching three new A380 routes in just three days – Milan and San Francisco on 1st December, followed by Houston on 3rd December, concluding a mo- mentous year. In May, the Emirates A380 was the star attraction at the ILA Berlin Air Show 2014 drawing in thousands of visitors while on static display. The aircraft continues to be a showstop- per at airports around the world. The 3-minute long 'mash-up' vid- eo features unique footage from the Emirates A380 flight deck, includ- ing a rainy approach to San Francis- co, a rousing water cannon salute in Frankfurt, a night time touchdown in Mumbai and a glide slope land- ing view from London Gatwick. In 2014, Emirates received 13 Air- bus A380s, including its 50th A380. Currently the world's largest A380 operator with 57 aircraft in fleet, Emirates is expecting to take de- livery of 15 A380s in 2015 and cur- rently has 83 A380s on order. The Emirates A380 flies to 34 destina- tions across the globe, with Perth to join the network in May 2015. Emirates currently operates daily scheduled flights between Malta and Dubai via Larnaka, Cyprus.
