WHAT'S ON ELKA Duo's journey continues through Malta and its Centre for Creativity St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity is currently showcas- ing an exhibition entitled 'Flying Sculptures', created and produced by artists-in-residence, Elodie Laurent and Stéphane Kiszak, jointly known as ELKA Duo. It will remain on display at the Upper Galleries until February 15. The French-Belgian duo traces its origins in 2010, but is currently covering entirely new ground with the project, 'Espace Zero'. Hav- ing sold and given away all their belongings, and armed with just a ten-kilogram backpack each, the two have literally departed from nil and have, for the past seven months since May 2014, travelled on foot while creating works for the project. Restless, as mobile artists, they challenged every notion of space, body and movement, and have as a result crossed more than mere physical and geographical bounda- ries. Malta has been their latest port of call, following a stay in Morocco. Having wandered along its coasts, hills, cliffs, abandoned places, side- lined projects and built-up areas, any site could have been considered as a potential 'Flying Sculpture' site. These 'sculptures' are composed of random, found objects gathered along the way, and which are as- sembled and "poised" for a multi- photo-shoot. The end-product is a familiar-looking, practically deso- late landscape, save for an eternally suspended matrix of objects defying all sense of gravity and belonging. These works, in fact, represent more a figment of the imagination than fragments obtained from the physical, real world. Indeed, if the artistic duo is living a dream, these surreal visions are their parting gift, as they exit one phase to enter another, in yet another foreign and strange land. ELKA duo's journey will continue to the next phase following their departure from Malta after the clo- sure of the exhibition in February 2015, with no end in sight. The exhibition 'Flying Sculptures' is curated by Patrick Fenech and or- ganised as part of the artists-in-res- idence programme by Fondazzjoni Ċentru għall-Kreattività. The Foundation has invited these two artists and supported their work during their stay in Malta, which they started in October 2014. Flying Sculptures is the direct outcome of their two month long residency. Wignacourt Tower receives a facelift Michael Frendo to give lecture on 'Malta's Magna Charta' Restoration work pro- ceeds at the Wignacourt Tower at St Paul's Bay which is soon to celebrate its 405th anniversary. The external walls of the tower are being restored with the support of the ERDF Funds for Sustain- able Tourism by the Malta Tourism Authority project in collaboration with Din l-Art Helwa, the NGO that manages this historic site in guardi- anship. Wignacourt Tower is the earliest coastal watch tower still standing in Malta and was built by Grand Master Wignacourt in 1610. In devotion to Malta's patron saint, its foundation stone was laid on Febru- ary 10 of the same year. Stanley Farrugia Randon, who is Din l-Art Ħelwa's warden for Wignacourt Tower said that this expensive and extensive conserva- tion work, "is just an example of the continued effort necessary to save our built heritage for posterity. We could not allow Din l-Art Ħelwa's 50th anniversary to go by without giving this mag- nificent tower a proper facelift and are grateful to MTA for its collaboration". On February 5, Dr Michael Frendo, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Parliament of Malta (2010-2013), will present a lecture entitled 'Malta's Magna Charta', a study on the Royal Charter granted to the Maltese in 1428 by Alfonso V of Aragon affirming the rights of the Maltese nation, the events leading to it and its political and constitutional sig- nificance. The talk will be delivered in English at the Caruana Cur- ran Hall, Din l-Art Ħelwa, 133, Melita Street, Valletta at 18:30. Entry is free, but donations to Din l-Art Ħelwa will be appreciated. More information: 2122 5952 info@dinlarthelwa.org Friar Alessandro will be performing at St Publius Church, Floriana on February 7
