maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 4 FEBRUARY 2015 17 THE Middlesea J70 Med Cup was recently launched at the Royal Malta Yacht Club by Hon. Chris Agius, Par- liamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport. The international sailing event, which will be taking place for the first time between 4 June and 7 June, 2015 in Malta is sponsored by Middlesea Insurance and organised by the J70 Association Malta in collaboration with the Royal Malta Yacht Club. During the launch, Hon. Chris Agius praised the initiative, espe- cially the positive impact which the race will have on local tourism. "The Maltese sea and landscape are second to none and Malta surely deserves to be a world class sailing destination," he said. Alfredo Munoz, President and CEO of Middlesea Insurance said, "Mapfre Group, of which Middlesea Insurance forms part, has a long tra- dition of supporting sailing events. In fact, MAPFRE is currently one of the sponsors of the Volvo Ocean Race." Sebastian Ripard of the J70 Asso- ciation Malta praised the attributes of the J70 boat, stating that this sail- ing class is increasing in popularity since it offers a fun but demanding sailing experience. He added that the Association is doing its best to attract as many participants as pos- sible to the race. Middlesea Insurance p.l.c. Events Gasco Energy endeavours to dismantle Qajjenza gas tanks THE last stage in the removal of the gas tanks and equipment at the former gas plant in Qajjenza will be completed by the end of spring this year. Gasco Energy Ltd, the opera- tors of the LPG storage and bot- tling plant in Bengħisa, including the pipeline from the importation terminal to the facility, has signed an agreement with Trihills Heavy Industries Ltd for the dismantling of the old Enemalta gas storage and filling plant in Qajjenza. In operation since 1959, 'it-tank- ijiet tal-Qajjenza', as they are com- monly known, had been officially decommissioned in September 2013 following a degassing process. The gas tanks and the pipes will be dismantled in stages, cut up and removed from site. Today, Gasco Energy operates a new fully certified gas bottling and storage facility at Bengħisa with an investment of €20 million. Fully respecting the EU stringent crite- ria as established in the Seveso II Directives, the modern Bengħisa storage and bottling plant was in- augurated in November 2012. Ear- lier, as from 1 February 2009, Liq- uigas Malta - the other company in the Gasco Consortium - became responsible for gas distribution in cylinders, in bulk and also auto- gas, for the first time in Malta. Gasco Energy CEO Paul Agius Delicata said, "We have monitored the air quality of each storage tank at Qajjenza and established that there is no trace of gas or other combustibles present in the tanks or equipment. In 2013 the site was also certified gas free by the COMAH competent authority. "We will continue to monitor until all the empty tanks and an- cillary equipment is removed from site in order to ensure that the dismantling is done safely. After all the tanks and equipment are removed, the Qajjenza site will be handed back to the Government." Through a €20 million invest- ment, Gasco Energy has more than doubled the LPG storage fa- cilities and therefore has secured a continuous, adequate supply of liquefied petroleum gas at all times to cater for present and fu- ture requirements of the Maltese market.
