More information: www.sengleadramagroup.com. A long name for a long customer! Of the two dozen or so grasshopper species that occur in Malta, the Mediterranean Slant-faced is easily the weirdest looking. True to its name, this insect's head is propped in a sort of perpetual forward tilt, as if someone glued its chin to its neck. Not only that, but the face is rather bulbous and the antennae look like thin elongated leaves. But for all its eldritch looks and large size – females can reach about 8cm, making it one of our biggest insects – it is distinctly hard to spot this animal in its grassland habitat. Its long thin spindly body and cryptic green or grey-brown colour match perfectly the blades of the grasses on which the Slant-faced Grasshopper (M: Gurat ta' Rasu Twila) lives and feeds. But once you spot it you will marvel at the species that is closest to a stick insect among Malta's fauna. Like other grasshoppers, it is harmless to people, so let's stop scaring our kids of them, and mothball once and for all this 'jaghtik is-sikkina' business! Just 13 days to the SPRING HUNTING REFERENDUM. If you care about the countryside please GO and VOTE NO! 447. MEDITERRANEAN SLANT-FACED GRASSHOPPER Green Idea of the week 350: Have your say – did you know that Malta is the only country in Europe to allow recreational spring hunting? Vote nO on 11 april to Stop Spring hunting and give birds a chance to breed. an abrogative referendum is held to cancel a particular piece of law. Because there is a specific piece of law which allows spring hunting in Malta, we can use an abrogative referendum for people to vote on the issue. Lawyers have researched the subject, and because there is no particular law which allows past times such as fireworks, festas and horseracing, a referendum could not be called on these things. This rumour that 'your hobbies will be next' has been spread by the hunters to try and scare people into voting 'yes'. however, lawyers assure us that these people should have nothing to fear.
