VI This Week maltatoday, Sunday, 29 March 2015 Din l-Art Ħelwa is pleased to announce a talk by Maj. Tony Abela entitled 'W WII Radars and military History at Dingli ' on April 9 at Din l-Art Ħelwa, 133, Melita Street, Valletta at 18:30. The speaker will look into what role Malta played in British Radar Experimental stage and during W WII and give detailed information about the Radars at Dingli, their role as Early Warn- ing Systems, Fighter Control Interception and their impact on the stopping the line of supplies to Rommel in the North African Campaign, which was a turning point of the outcome of W WII. The presentation will also clarif y the role the planes Faith, Hope and Charit y played during the early stages of the War and how Malta defence tactics took a different twist as soon as Air Vice Marshall Park took over the Malta Command. The presentation will include a number of photographs of per- sonnel who served and equipment used at the time, as well as site maps and structure photos. Maj. Abela will highlight how the Germans and Italians took some time until they realised that Malta's defence was backed with such advanced systems. He will expand on the enemy's efforts to disable the systems by Radar Jam- ming and explain the counter- measures taken by the technical personnel to mislead the German Radar Chief to eventually aban- don the siege of Malta. A brief mention will be made of the Nav y and Army engagements at Dingli during W WII, mainly as Intelligence Services and Coast Guard duties, respectively. The talk will be delivered in English and is free of charge, however a donation to Din l-Art Ħelwa by all attending will be appreciated. These donations help funding DLĦ's restoration projects. Maltese theatre students head to West End for training 'A Week In The Life' will see 40 aspiring musical theatre performers from DLS productions being trained in London by leading coaches in the industry who have worked with the casts of West End shows such as Les Miserables, Phantom of The Opera, Miss Saigon, Billy Elliot, Matilda, Lion King, Wicked and many more. The project was set up by musical theatre actor Ben Darmanin in 2014 with the aim to provide high-end musical theatre training for aspiring performers. With over 18 years experience in the industry both on and off stage, Darmanin's vision is to give young musical theatre actors a real experience of what it is like to spend a week in the shoes of a performer-in-training. After the success of the first workshop last year, a number of participants were given scholarships at the prestigious Margaret Howard Theatre College. Peter Camilleri, Chrissy War- rington and Daniel Holland were awarded a three-year training course in Musical Theatre and Dance, while a week-long scholarship train- ing with top UK tutors in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, acting and singing was awarded to Dean Ellul, Amy Cordina, Hannah Grech Pirotta, Kyle Fearne, Maria Grech and Bea Micallef. Participants of this year's workshop will have a jam-packed timetable, taking classes in various dance styles, as well as acting improvisation, solo singing, and most importantly the integration of acting and singing. During the week they will be exposed to classes they are familiar with and others they are not. They will also have to opportunity to watch West End shows and get exclusive backstage access.
