Events 26 maltatoday, Sunday, 19 april 2015 Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates, will soon be adding the popular Indonesian Is- land of Bali to its Asia Pacific net- work, opening up a new trade lane between the island and the cargo carrier's network of more than 140 destinations. Bali will become Emirates Sky- Cargo's second gateway in Indone- sia and 24th Asia Pacific point in its global network. With the launch of its daily serv- ice to Bali, Emirates SkyCargo will offer 294 tonnes of cargo capacity per week both ways in the belly hold of a Boeing 777-300 ER which will be used on the route. The new Bali service will bring to four the number of daily flights Emirates SkyCargo has to Indonesia - three of which are to the country's capi- tal Jakarta. "With Bali joining our network, it opens up new opportunities for businesses on the island as well as for those across our network of more than 140 destinations. Our hub Dubai, which is strategically located between east and west, enables us to offer our customers in the Asia Pacific region access to markets in the Middle East, Africa and Europe," said Nabil Sultan, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President, Cargo. Goods expected to be carried from Bali include marine prod- ucts (tuna and other fresh fish), household goods, leather goods and handicrafts mainly going to Europe, while household goods, personal effects, perishables, phar- maceuticals and automotive spares are expected to be imported, not just into Bali but also to Surabaya and Balikpapan, as well as other catchment areas. Jakarta was Emirates' first gate- way in Indonesia when it launched its three flights per week service via Singapore and Colombo in 1992, and since March 2013, the airline has been operating three non-stop flights daily from Jakarta to Dubai with Boeing 777 aircraft. In 2014 alone, Emirates SkyCargo carried 16,000 tonnes of cargo on its three flights from Jakarta to Dubai.. Emirates' new daily flight to Bali will depart Dubai as EK398 at 0820hrs and arrive at Bali's Denpasar International Airport at 2140hrs the same day. The re- turn flight, EK399, will depart at 2340hrs and arrive at Dubai Inter- national Airport at 0500 the next day. Emirates flies on a daily schedule between Malta and Dubai via Lar- naka, Cyprus. COMTEC, Malta's leading com- pany in the field of pest control, is sponsoring the conservation of the notarial volume of Giacomo Bald- acchino's eyewitness account of the arrival of the 'Gran Soccorso' in September 1565, which is said to be a critical tipping point in the battle against the Ottoman forces during the Great Siege. Giacomo Baldacchino practised as a Notary in the early decades of the Knights' rule. Even though it was a time of war, during the Siege he continued to draw up deeds and this particular volume sheds light on one of the glorious chapters of our nation's history. The conservation is being under- taken as part of a scheme initiated by the Notarial Archives Resources Council (NARC), which is a volun- tary organization, entitled 'Adopt a Notary'. Dr Joan Abela, who is heading the rehabilitation project at the Notarial Archives, said that all conservation work will be su- pervised by top book and paper conservator Dr Theresa Zammit Lupi. Dr Abela further stated that it is a great satisfaction to witness the levels of excellence which the NARC are attaining in book and paper conservation. Over many past years Comtec has been in- volved in preservation projects that have contributed towards the restoration of various items which have been brought to their origi- nal state as part of its professional work. Such an undertaking is seen as being part of the company's firm commitment to a culture of Corpo- rate Social Responsibility. The Notarial Archives based in St Christopher Street, Valletta were set up by Grand Master Lascaris in 1640.They are a repository of over 20,000 registers with the oldest preserved notarial volume being the one authored by Notary Paolo Bonello dating back to 1467 with Notary Salvatore Ciantar being listed as the first Archivist. A treasure trove of information, some of the documents and deeds date back to the 1400's and provide a unique insight about daily life in Malta. Unfortunately, over the years, a lack of sufficient funding programmes has not helped the state of some of the documents, which have suffered from being stored in damp and inadequate en- vironmental conditions. The col- lection has also suffered damage from bomb raids and other misfor- tunes during the war years. Today the archives require all the support they can muster from all sectors since they are an important momu- ment to our national identity and heritage "COMTEC are not just proud but privileged to support the Notarial Archives Resources Council, as the ongoing work being undertaken here will leave a long lasting effect of immense benefit to researchers. We hope that like others before us, many others will take cue and fol- low suit in the coming years to help preserve a very important part of our National Heritage by fostering a strong sense of corporate social responsibility towards the preser- vation of a very important part of our Maltese cultural identity ". Blood Donation Day at the Farsons Brewery The Farsons Group once again renewed its call for blood donors on Friday, 27 March 2015 as part of its an- nual CSR initiatives. The in- vitation was also extended to the company's neighbouring organisations. The activity, organised in collaboration with the Mo- bile Blood Donation Unit, saw a good turnout with over 30 donors. "This annual activity raises the level of awareness and sol- idarity felt by all employees in realising that their contribu- tion to save lives by blood do- nation is a precious gift to hu- man life," commented John J Attard, Employee Relations & Security Manager at Simonds Farsons Cisk plc. "We would like to thank all those who re- sponded to this noble call, as well as the nursing and medi- cal staff from the National Blood Transfusion Unit." Left to right Dr. Joan Abela ( NARC), Mr. Tony Zahra Chairman Comtec, Ms. Theresa Zammit Lupi and Mr. Peter Mercieca Director Comtec during the presentation ceremony at the Notarial Archives in St. Christopher Street, Valetta.
