Speakers will be commemorating 75 years since Batman's prime antagonist The Joker first appeared in print, with topics ranging from the history of the Joker as a character in comic books, film and animation, as well as ancillary subjects like the history of 'evil clowns', the role of the 'grin' in art and literature, and the social and cultural anxieties that the Joker represents and – through the writers and filmmakers in question at any given time – sets out to express.
