MALTA Public Transport's new transport card called 'tallinja' card will come into usage as of July 2015, as commuters can today register for their card now free of charge online at www.tallinja.com, or by calling 21222000. The new tallinja card will entitle holders to reduced bus fares, and will make it easy to use the bus without the need to buy any tick- ets. The price of tickets bought on board the buses will go up as of July 2015, with the only ticket that will be able to be bought on board the bus being a single journey of up to two hours at €2.00 in summer or €1.50 in winter for day services, or €3.00 for night services. The intelligent card will be per- sonalised with the holder's photo and name, and can be topped up with credit online, over the phone, at one of Malta Public Transport's sales outlets or at any MaltaPost post office. The credit on the card will not expire. Applicants will be advised when their card is ready to be collected from their Local Council as of June. Different cards and fares are available for children aged between 4 and 10 years, Students, Adults, Kartanzjan / Maltese 60+ Identity Card Holders, Blue Badge Holders and Gozo Residents. Children un- der 4 will continue to travel for free and will not need to present any card. Children aged between 4 and 10, together with Kartanzjan Hold- ers (or 60+ Maltese Identity Card Holders) and Blue Badge Holders will be charged a reduced fare of 25c for every Single Journey of up to two hours, including bus inter- changes. Adults will benefit from a reduced fare of 75c for every Single Journey of up to two hours, including bus interchanges. However, they will never be charged more than €26 in any month. In the case of Student card holders, the system will stop charging automatically at €21 every month, whereas in the case of Gozo residents travelling in Gozo only, the automatic capping for a month is set at €10. The exact date in July when this change will take place will be an- nounced at a later stage to ensure that there is sufficient time for people to register and collect their tallinja card. Malta Public Transport said it was important for bus users to register for their free tallinja card before July to benefit from lower bus fares. Registrations will remain open even after July, however a reg- istration fee may apply from 2016. "This is a national initiative to reduce the amount of tickets that are bought from drivers on board the buses," Julio Tironi, director for the Transportation Division of Autobuses de Leon, which will take over the new public transport sys- tem, said. "Today, 9 out of 10 passengers still buy their ticket on the bus. Driv- ers still need to care for the safety of passengers while issuing tickets, checking tickets, taking cash and giving change. At the same time other passengers are waiting. This is contributing negatively to the ef- ficiency of the bus service, resulting in longer journey times, less punc- tuality, more traffic congestion and increased air pollution.
