maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 20 MAY 2015 20 Sport SPORTTODAY FOOTBALL Nicola Berti in Malta this June Inter Club Malta have announced that ex-international player of Inter, Nicola Berti, will be visiting our islands from the 18 - 22 of June, 2015 NICOLA Berti will be the special guest of Inter Club Malta for activities being held at the club and in other venues, as a big "thank you" to the outgoing President John Zammit and as well welcoming the new President Dr. Chris Bonett. Nicola Berti is an Inter legend that had 229 caps with the "Nerazzurri" between 1988 and 1998 where he scored a total of 29 goals. Nicola won two UEFA CUPS with Inter in seasons 1990/1991 and 1993/1994, where he scored in the first leg final against Roma in 1991 and also scored in the first leg final versus Austria Salzburg, in 1994. Berti also won the so called "League of Records" with Inter in season 1988/89 with Trapattoni as a coach. Berti is also an ex-international player where he capped 39 times with Italy and scored 3 goals. He made part of the Italian contingent that reached the semi-finals of the 1990 World and also was again chosen by Arrigo Sacchi for the 1994 World Cup in the USA where Italy had reached the Final. Inter Club Malta will shortly issue a full programme of activities where its members will have the chance to meet with this Inter Legend. Nicola Berti Raheem Sterling eyeing Liverpool exit LIVERPOOL winger Raheem Sterling has reportedly told the club he wants a move away from Anfield this summer. The 20-year-old rejected a new €140,000-a-week contract and reportedly informed Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers he wants to go. Sterling is expected to meet the Reds manager and chief execu- tive Ian Ayre on Friday. It is un- derstood Liverpool want to keep Sterling, whose deal ends in 2017. Sterling has two years remain- ing on his contract and feels he is undervalued by the €140,000- a-week deal offered to him by the club, while he also remains un- convinced about their ability to challenge for silverware. The news drew harsh criticism from pundits and former Liver- pool players such as Jamie Car- ragher and Phil Thompson. "For a 20-year-old kid to be tak- ing on Liverpool Football Club over a contract – to the pit of my stomach that just winds me up, it angers me," Carragher said. "The lad is from London and he obviously wants to go back home. It might not be about money. It may be about trophies or playing in the Champions League. If it's about trophies, Liverpool had a chance for a trophy this year – in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley against Aston Villa. Where was Sterling?" Carragher asked. The former Liverpool stalwart added "If you want trophies, they don't get given to you, you have to earn them, you have to play well in big games." On his part, former Anfield captain Thompson said if Ster- ling goes he will be doing so at the wrong time and for the wrong reasons, adding the 20-year-old has "far too high an opinion of himself." Thompson said that the winger might already have a deal in place with another club and warned "Raheem Sterling is a good player. He is not a great player. He has done well for Liverpool but he is not the superstar that he per- ceives himself to be. He has still got a lot of learning to do and he is at the right club to do it." Raheem Sterling United demand €40 million for de Gea MANCHESTER United demand €40 million for goalkeeper David de Gea but Real Madrid favour a swap deal involving full-back Fabio Coentrao. De Gea has reportedly agreed personal terms worth more than €5 million-a-year after tax with the Spanish giants but the clubs are yet to agree a fee for the 24-year-old, who has 14 months left on his con- tract. Former Red Devils hero Gary Nev- ille said United should do all they can to sign Gareth Bale if de Gea heads in the opposite direction to Real Madrid but the Spanish press claimed the most expensive player in history will not be offered as part of any deal involving de Gea. Madrid-based paper AS, mean- while, report that de Gea will move to the Bernabeu regardless of whether Real's current goalkeeper Iker Casillas stays at the club or not. Casillas' future in the Spanish capital is in doubt after a mixed sea- son in which he has had to compete with Keylor Navas for the starting spot. Casillas is also reportedly un- decided on his next move and has been linked with a host of top Euro- pean sides including Arsenal. Reportedly Real had an initial of- fer of €30 million for de Gea turned down by United but it seems in- creasingly likely that he is on his way. Old Trafford manager Louis van Gaal said "I analyse his position and then I say he is Spanish, he is Span- ish international, still behind Casil- las, now a Spanish club is coming, his girlfriend is Spanish, his father and mother come here every week or every two weeks so it is diffi- cult."
