Themes may change from one week to the other Spectacular opening to 2015 BSJ Open Water Swimming Championships THE Open Water Swimming Champion- ships organised annually by Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club under the auspices of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta kicked off last Sunday 7 June with a spectacular race at St. Paul's Bay. Held in perfect conditions, the two-kilo- metre race saw one hundred fifteen swim- mers taking to the clear waters. In the Males' category, Luke Camilleri Cuschieri, (Sirens ASC) making a return af- ter a year's absence in these championships won the race in 28 minutes, 27 seconds, ahead of second placed Andrew Sultana (28:38), another new comer to the champi- onships, and Richard Zerafa (28:39). Reigning champion Sarah Demicoli (Nep- tunes WPSC) was the first to finish the fe- males' race in a time of 28 minutes, 42 sec- onds. Hannah Pace (28:52) and Margaret Seguna (30:26) finished second and third respectively mirroring the podium places achieved in this category last year. The Open Water Swimming Champion- ships will consist of five two kilometre swims and a four kilometre swim which will also serve as qualifying events for the forthcoming Gozo-Malta Open Swimming Competition to be held on Saturday 29th August.
