maltatoday, SUNDAY, 14 JUNE 2015 This Week 33 WHAT'S ON UNTIL AUGUST 15 Obsidio Melitae Exhibition of historical documents pertaining to the Great Siege of Malta at the National Library, Valletta. The main focus of the display will be the original prints by Matteo Perez d 'Aleccio depicting the highlights of the siege. Other interesting documents include original letters of congratulation from European sovereigns sent to Grand Master Jean de Valette after the lifting of the siege. On view are also published contemporary accounts of the siege, including the 1567 and 1568 editions of Francesco Balbi da Correggio's day-to-day diary. Modern scholarly studies of the 1565 event will also feature in the display. Opening hours are Monday to Friday between 08:15 and 17:00 and on Saturdays between 08:15 and 13:00; and between June 16 and August 16 from Monday to Saturday between 08:00 and 13:00. Admission is free. Presentation of ID card / passport is required. MUSIC AND NIGHTLIFE JUNE 23-25 Kelma Kelma Nota Nota: Kuncert tal-Qaddisin A series of three concerts that combine traditional and contemporary music and Maltese literature at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, Valletta at 21:00. Tickets: €15 for general admission; €10 for children, students, seniors and €30 block ticket (for all 3 events). JUNE 26 Class of Y2K Nostalgic early noughties party at Razzett l-Ahmar, Mosta from 20:00. Featuring DJs Clint (KNTRL / Dolls for Idols) and Dave (I.YOU / China). 'As long as it was constantly played at Koyote, Axis, Havana, Coconut, Remedy, the radio or your CD / MP3 player in the late '90s or early '00s, it's going in.' Entrance is at €4. FILM FESTIVAL JUNE 15-21 Valletta Film Festival First edition of the Valletta Film Festival will take place across various venues in the capital city. The event will consist of an official competition (feature films, docs and shorts) and four other sections. In total around 45 feature films will be screened at the first edition of the festival at five of the city's most attractive locations. PUBLIC LECTURE JUNE 17 Bread and Bakers in 18th Century Malta Lecture by Dr Noel Buttigieg at Phoenicia Hotel, Floriana at 18:00. During the lecture, Buttigieg will xplore how, in the eighteenth century, managing bread and bakers went far beyond food and nutritional values, but became an exercise in political and economic power with great social, cultural and symbolic significance. Organised by Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar in conjunction with Slow Food Malta (SFM) and the International Institute for Baroque Studies at the University of Malta. A €5 donation is kindly solicited.
