Events 48 maltatoday, Sunday, 21 June 2015 Employees celebrate Vodafone's 25th anniversary by covering 85km from Gozo to Malta in one day Vodafone celebrated another first on 12 June when its employ- ees walked, ran, cycled, trekked and kayaked their way across the Maltese islands, covering 85km in just one day. This event, the Vodafone Malta Cross Country Challenge 2015, was held as part of the company's 25th anniversa- ry celebrations. This was the first cross-country race of its type and length ever to be held in Malta. The Challenge kicked off in Gharb in Gozo in the early morn- ing and ended in Marsaxlokk, via Comino, in the afternoon. Ten teams participated, made up of athletes who tackled an individ- ual leg, or more, and a support team in cars who navigated the routes and provided nutritional support. The winning team, led by Luan Vella, completed the race in 7 hours. "The challenge of this event was not just the day itself," said Christian Briffa, a member of the winning team, "but really started the moment this challenge was announced, when we had to pick our teams, decide which partici- pant would do best in what and coordinate all the logistics. How- ever it was a challenge definitely worth tackling and we're already looking forward to the next one!" apart from the 200 employees who participated directly in the Challenge, over 20 other employ- ees provided support throughout the day as marshals and officials, making this a truly company- wide event. amanda nelson, Vodafone Mal- ta's Ceo commented, "This was a day that really brought out the best in Vodafone. all the partici- pants have accomplished some- thing truly memorable, particu- larly considering most of them are not trained athletes, and it was wonderful to see the focus and teamwork that team mem- bers brought to the challenge, not only on the day itself but also in the run-up to it. Congratulations to you all for your commitment and positive energy throughout." Vodafone Malta would like to thank antonello Gauci who as- sisted in organising the event, as well as the Malta Red Cross for their support throughout the whole day. Photos covering the entire event can be viewed on Vo- dafone Malta's facebook Page. EkoSkola Summit and EkoSkola Parliament address Millennium Development Goals TyinG up with HSBC's ongo- ing Water Programme – Catch the drop campaign, this year's edition of the ekoSkola young People's environmental Summit focused on the progress achieved in reaching the Millennium de- velopment Goals. These eight international de- velopment goals were estab- lished following the Millennium Summit of the United nations in 2000, and include the eradi- cation of poverty, gender equal- ity, environmental sustainability and access to clean water. nature Trust Malta, who runs the eko- skola programme locally, made this annual event possible. Senior analyst in Hydrogeol- ogy Manuel Sapiano addressed the plenary session. The chil- dren were informed about what progress has been achieved so far with regards to water in reaching the Millennium development Goals. This was followed by five work- shops - with two of them focuss- ing solely on water - on how small sustainable development projects lead to a significantly positive difference. Many of the students whose respective school is participating in the HSBC 'Catch the drop' Campaign were more than eager to share their learning experiences with fellow students and encouraged them to follow suit in suggesting water conservation practices to their respective schools. The points raised during the event were subsequently pre- sented by the students during the 11th annual ekoSkola Parliament session, which was chaired by Speaker anglu farrugia. Some of the students and MPs highlight- ed the importance of safeguard- ing Malta's water resources.
