Three weeks later on August 28, 29 and 30 it happens all over again in Nadur, Gozo. At both festivals the way it works is simple – Entrance is free but if you want to drink wine, you just purchase a wristband and a souvenir glass (which is then yours to keep) and try as many of the twenty wines on offer as you like, as often as you like. The last glasses will be sold at 11.00pm, last wine poured at 11.30pm and the festivals close at midnight. No glasses will be sold or alcohol poured to anyone under the age of 17. Religious feasts The feast of St Lawrence (San Lawrenz, Gozo) will be celebrated today. Birds of prey are medium-to-large powerful predators that dominate the food pyramid of the bird world. But even among the (generally) smaller, milder-looking perching birds there is a small group with rather hawk-like features: the shrikes. Shrikes have powerful hooked beaks that they use to tear up their catch, usually large insects like bumblebees, grasshoppers or dragonflies, or small reptiles like lizards – the larger shrikes wouldn't pass up a mouse either. Only a handful or so of shrike species live or migrate in our part of the world and none are particularly common. The species most likely to feature on a Maltese birder's list is the woodchat shrike (M: kaccamendula). It is a spring and autumn visitor but occasionally a pair stop and nest as well. Shrikes have this rather grisly habit of impaling their prey on thorny branches 'for later', just like meats hung up on hooks at the butcher's. In some parts of the world, shrikes are in fact known as butcher birds. 466.
