WHAT'S ON The Black-winged Stilts (Fras-servjent) have done it again. These elegant, extralong-legged shorebirds have in recent years become special darlings for BirdLife Malta since they first nested in 2011 at Għadira nature reserve. This year was no exception, with a total of four strapping youths (two pictured) growing up and getting ready for migration. I never fail to be amazed that a pair or two of these long-distance travellers take off from equatorial Africa in spring and fly 4000km across savannah, desert and sea. They have the pick of thousands of lakes and lagoons around southern Europe and yet they choose Għadira – a pond by comparison – to set up home, lay and incubate eggs for a month, and raise a family of leggy chicks. All this just 100m from a beach teeming with people, speedboats, paragliders, AFM helicopters zooming overhead, loud music, bright lights and the almost constant roar of traffic from an even nearer arterial road. Imagine, just imagine, the potential if that tiny nature reserve was, say, three times bigger! 467.
