maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 19 AUGUST 2015 5 JAMES DEBONO MALTA Projects Limited, a state owned company, has ap- plied for the relocation of exist- ing public sanitary facilities in Qbajjar, the construction of a public lift, a new restaurant and a 'public deck area' on the rocky coast below. Plans submitted to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority earmark 183 square metres of the public coastline for sunbeds only. Two other decking areas covering a to- tal of 263 square metres are earmarked for both sunbeds and as an area where people can spread their towels to sunbathe. A 127 square metre walkway is also being pro- posed on the coast. A part of the rocky coast will be covered with "com- posite timber decking" where sunbeds can be placed. A de- mountable tent structure is also being proposed. A public roof terrace and a restaurant are being pro- posed on the bar and restau- rant kitchen which is to be built in the area currently oc- cupied by the public sanitary facilities. A number of trees on the promenade will be re- located to other parts of the promenade. Malta Parks Limited is wholly owned by Malta Government Investments Limited. An embellishment project which included a waterpark and a kiosk was proposed in 2011 under the previous administra- tion but the project did not in- clude any development on the rocky shore. The study was aimed to find whether fuel station attendants manifest a further decrease in lung function when compared to other full-time workers working outdoors and whether smoking tobacco manifests a further de- crease in lung function among at- tendants. Lung function of 30 fuel station attendants was compared to 30 outdoor workers, the latter made up of AFM recruits. Half of both groups were participants who smoke tobacco. The study found that although non-smokers among petrol station attendants did experience lower lung functions, the difference was not statistically significant. But it also found that tobacco smokers among fuel attendents showed a statistically significant drop in all three lung function parameters when compared to the armed forces recruits. According to the study exposure to volatile fuel compounds and roadway motor vehicle exhaust leads to a higher risk of chronic lung disease and carcinogenesis. Tobacco smoking further acceler- ates this process. The study concludes that hav- ing more automated fuel pumps would help in reducing long hours of exposure for fuel station attend- ants. "In light of the health hazards that a FSA faces, this job can be made redundant as in many re- gions in first world countries since every motor vehicle driver can op- erate an automated pump". The study was written by Ja- bob Vella from the Department of Family Medicine and Manwel Borg, a lance bombardier in the Armed Forces of Malta. Warning: Fuel attendants with a smoking habit suffer from lower lung function Qbajjar earmarked for commercial development State owned Malta Projects Limited applies for the construction of a restaurant on the promenade and a timber deck area for sunbeds and rocky coast A public roof terrace and a restaurant are being proposed on the bar and restaurant kitchen If you are a pump attendant: Don't smoke
