maltatoday, SUNDAY, 20 SEPTEMBER 2015 39 This Week Nostalgic watercolour exhibition held at Palazzo de Piro THE grand halls of Palazzo de Piro in Mdina will host a watercolour exhibition by Maltese artist Paul Caruana on October 2. On view until October 31, the exhibition entitled 'Dear Younger Me' will be inaugurated by the President Emeritus of Malta Ugo Mifsud Bonnici. Everyday life instances from a time gone by will be show- cased in 25 new watercolour paint- ings. 'Dear Younger Me' is Caruana's 11th solo exhibition with the pre- vious exhibition entitled 'Short Stories' held at the National Mu- seum of Fine Arts in 2011-2012. Paul Caruana has been a keen watercolour artist since childhood and has taken part in numerous collective exhibitions, both locally and abroad. He studied art in gov- ernment schools under the guid- ance of the late Antoine Camilleri, Harry Alden and Anthony Degio- vanni and has showcased works in various exhibitions, both solo and collectives. The Valletta artist also illustrat- ed George Cini's books on Strait Street, now in its second edition. Caruana said: "'Dear Younger Me' seeks to rediscover everyday instances during my youth and to share these nostalgic memories with the audience. One hopes that these paintings evoke fond mem- ories from older generations, while providing a glimpse of what every- day life meant during those days to younger generations." Nena by Paul Caruana Trio Bellagio headline FAA concert THE second in Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar's 'Concerts in the Garden', will fea- ture Spanish tenors Trio Bellagio playing old and new favourites, on September 26 at Villa Bologna in Attard from 19:30. The Trio Bellagio has a wide following in Europe and the Americas, and for the past two years the Trio have been guest stars on Spanish national TV's New Year's Eve gala show. Singing a wide variety of music, from classical Italian, to Latino, French, Eng- lish and Maltese, this concert will feature popular songs including Caruso, Funiculì Funiculà, Il Mondo, Con Tè Partiro, Feelin' Good, Love, la Vie en Rose and many other favourites. Well-known singers Christine Dalli and Deborah Attard will also be participating in the concert together with the Trio Bel- lagio. The event will also feature stands of local artisans showcasing handmade crafts including jewellery, ceramics, art, and fili- gree as well as stands selling Spanish food and wine. The series 'Concerts in the Garden' is a new venture undertaken by FAA to enhance national appreciation and awareness of Maltese heritage and how beautiful homes like Villa Bologna have taken on a new life through the celebration of arts, culture and social identity and is supported by Conti- nental Cars – SEAT, Villa Bologna, Farsons, Attard & Co and F Sharp event organisers. Those interesting in applying for an FAA membership can do so here: http://new.faa.org.mt/how-to-help/ become-a-member/ Arts Council Malta aims to increase visibility of Maltese writing with translation grant ARTS Council Malta has recently launched the Translation Grant, a fund which aims to support the translation of creative writing, ranging from books to films, for international distribution. Formerly known as Spreading Words, the Translation Grant seeks to increase the visibility of Maltese creative writing on in- ternational platforms and to help creative writing in the Maltese language to access international markets and audiences. With a session budget of €25,000 and a maximum grant of €5,000, the grant has been updated to fo- cus more on the internationalisa- tion of literature, in line with Arts Council Malta's internationalisa- tion strategy for the cultural and creative sectors. The grant addresses the trans- lation of original creative writing from Maltese to any other lan- guage. Literature, theatre scripts and subtitling, TV drama scripts, film scripts, animation scripts and creative documentaries written and/or produced by an audio- visual company and/or Maltese broadcaster and subtitling all fall within the scope of the revamped Translation Grant. Priority will be given to works in the Maltese language or works which were originally written in the Maltese language although ap- plications in other languages by any Malta-based author will also be considered. "Through the Translation Grant, not only can Maltese writing be made accessible to international audiences and markets; it also al- lows Maltese writers to measure themselves up against the interna- tional writing stage," ACM chair Albert Marshall said. The revamped Translation Grant is being launched in collaboration with the National Book Council, which organises the annual Na- tional Book Prize. Arts Council Malta will be giving a translation grant of €5,000 to the winner of the Novel Category of the Book Prize, which will be announced in the first week of December. "The National Book Council strongly encourages local pub- lishers and authors to take part in this initiative as part of their plans and campaigns to promote and export their literature outside our shores," said National Book Coun- cil chairman Mark Camilleri. Like other public funds admin- istered by Arts Council Malta, the Translation Grant is competitive and will be evaluated according to established criteria. Applications are open until 26 October 2015. An information session will be held on 23 Septem- ber.
