Themes may change from one week to the other Triathlete Vella Wood returns to Pro Ironman Circuit at Ironman Barcelona WITH the National Sprint Triathlon Championship title safely tucked under her belt, Pro Ironman, Birkirkara St. Joseph and national team tria- thlete Michelle Vella Wood is now focusing on her next inter- national commitment, Ironman Barcelona which will take place on Sunday 4 October. Having turned pro-athlete, the first Maltese female tria- thlete to do so, Vella Wood has performed considerably well in her recent two pro forays, completing successfully Iron- man 70.3 Gdynia in Poland and Ironman Vichy, France. Racing in the first edition of the Ironman 70.3 in Gdynia, Poland, Vella Wood tackled a tough and technical course to finish 6th overall in the female category. Vella Wood had a tough nut to crack in Vichy where weather conditions cou- pled with a highly technical bike route forced some of the seasoned pros to retire. Ironman Barcelona (3.8m swim, 180km cycle and 42.1km run) will showcase a historic and culturally rich region of Spain and host what promises to be one of the most spectac- ular Ironman race venues on the circuit. Contrary to Vella Wood 's previous race, the bike route in Barcelona is f lat which tends to make it a faster route. However, faster routes do not necessarily spell easier as there are less respite opportunities for the athletes. With a pool of a hundred pro athletes, twenty of which are some of the strongest female triathletes on the scene, Vella Wood is looking at yet another tough challenge. Michelle Vella Wood 's partic- ipation in Ironman Barcelona is possible thanks to the sponsor- ships of BMIT International, Smart Light Co. Ltd. and Vichy Malta, as well as the support of Mochika - Outdoor Life. A strong Maltese contingent will also be racing on Sunday and will consist of Josef Bona- via, Gaetano Catania, Joseph Cremona, David Galea, Mario Muscat, Nicholas Micallef, Glen Zammit, Jude Zammit. Race will take place on Sunday 4th October and can be followed on http://www.ironman.com/ t r i a t h l o n /e v e n t s /e m e a / i r o n - man/barcelona/ Pro Triathlete Michelle Vella Wood returns to pro racing this weekend in Barcelona
