52 maltatoday, Sunday, 1 november 2015 Events Emirates' social media customer service now provides 24-hour support in English and Arabic EmiratEs has extended its so- cial media customer service to provide 24-hour support, seven days a week. the airline will also expand its language offering to both arabic and English on twit- ter and Facebook. these services are now live. the social media support chan- nels have been active since au- gust 2012 and allow customers to interact with Emirates for queries and information. Beginning with 50 transactions per day via Face- book private message three years ago, the service has gained trac- tion and is now one of the most popular avenues for customers to reach Emirates. these chan- nels are most effectively used in real time when passengers are travelling and need additional as- sistance or to leave feedback on a pleasant experience. today, the airline's consultants handle more than 1,000 queries a day via the two social media channels. these queries range from support with bookings to compliments and feedback on products and services. With the introduction of 24-hour support, response times have greatly im- proved. "Our social media customer service complements other ex- isting channels so customers can reach us in the way they find most convenient. since we intro- duced our social media customer support channels, we have been constantly working to update and improve our offering. With travellers based worldwide and in different time zones, provid- ing 24-hour social media sup- port in English and arabic allows us to be more responsive, and serve more of our customers," explained Karen Bell-Wright, Emirates' senior Vice President of retail and Contact Centres. While common queries can be found at the Help Centre on emirates.com, Emirates custom- ers can also get in touch via other channels - through emails, retail outlets and phone. Emirates' social media custom- er service can be accessed from facebook.com/emirates, or on twitter: @emiratessupport. Emirates operates a daily sched- uled flight between Dubai and malta via Larnaca, Cyprus. "Liquigas malta is not in a position to assume responsibility for such il- legally painted and filled cylinders," said a spokesperson for Liquigas. the final day of this offer is this coming satur- day 7 november 2015. "at the rate that cylinders are being recovered, customers are ad- vised to contact Liquigas malta at their earliest to ensure a free of charge replace- ment with a full gas cylinder from Liquigas malta," said the company spokesperson. asked whether the offer will be extended, the company spokesper- son said: "Liquigas malta embarked on an information campaign in the press and social media since the be- ginning of October 2015. therefore, the final date of saturday 7 novem- ber for free of charge replacement for illegally painted cylinders will be respected." those who are in possession of an illegally painted grey cylinder should contact Liquigas malta on telephone 2248 6010 during office hours or via email at info@liquigas- malta.com Europe in 'weak' position to address mass migration from Africa, says Alfred Sant HEaD of the Labour delegation at the European Parliament al- fred sant said that conceptually and politically Europe is in a weak position to demand a transparent give-and-take from african coun- tries over the mass emigration of their citizens. sant addressed the European Parliament in strasbourg during the debate on the preparation of the Valletta summit of 11 and 12 november. the summit will ad- dress the challenges and opportu- nities of migration and recognises that migration is a shared respon- sibility of countries of origin, transit and destination. sant said he finds it difficult to be optimistic about the prospects of negotiations on Euro african cooperation regarding migrant movements and related socio- economic give-and-take. "since the heyday of neo-colo- nialism in africa, things have not improved much. through the in- ternational monetary Fund and other bodies, the West imposed its neo-liberal model of develop- ment on most african countries. "Privatisation, the removal of protectionism, and tailor-made forms of project tied aid suppos- edly liberalised economies but failed to trigger sufficient growth. they confirmed the pattern of extractive industries and agri- cultural commodity production where value added was produced by, among others, European and Chinese multinationals outside africa." sant said that urbanisation ac- celerated, farm communities dwindled and became poorer, jobs failed to materialise in townships. "in this neo-liberal context, un- surprisingly corruption and pub- lic mismanagement did not abate; they flourished. strictly speak- ing, in a neo-liberal, globalised context, free movement of labour cannot be excised from a doctrine which preaches the virtues of free movement of goods and services worldwide. For hundreds of thou- sands of africans, immigration has become their only hope," reit- erated sant.
